After the last three years we’ve had, any chance we can get to celebrate and spoil the special people in our lives, we’ll take. And so, with Mother’s Day coming up this year on Sunday, May 14, we thought we’d help you out with those celebrations by sharing some of our favourite ideas for gifts.
From perfumes in beautiful bottles to slick coffee machines and salon-grade blow dryers she’ll have for years to come, here are our picks for what to get the mum in your life this year.
Also, if you don’t get a chance to get the mum in your life a physical card for the day, consider sending her a personalised, digital greeting card from Giftoon. The company has launched a collection of ‘tongue in cheek’ Mother’s Day video greeting cards. Users can upload mum’s face and create a custom video greeting card that stars her as the main character.
Jewellery
Give Mum a stunning piece from Australian jewellery brand NAJO‘s edit of Mother’s Day gifts. If she often reaches for dainty accessories, she’ll adore this Mattina Silver Necklace (from $99). Or if she likes things a little more splashy, go for the Eternita Necklace ($549).
For pieces that are on the affordable end, but still made to last and in classic styles, pick her up something from Mejuri, a brand spotted on Emily Blunt, Oprah and Bella Hadid. Choose from delicate, expertly-crafted earrings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings.
Luggage
With travel picking back up, it could be time for your mum to get some new luggage. Beat her to it by getting her a suitcase for Mother’s Day. Melbourne-based luggage and travel bag brand July has a range of sturdy bags to choose from, whether it be for a weekend away or the trip of a lifetime. Pick the luggage your mum would like and then her favourite text, colour, emoji and placement for a personalised touch.
Sheets or Duvet Cover
Well-made, hotel-feel sheets are always a treat to slip into at the end of a long day so give your mum that experience by gifting her Eva hemp linen sheets. Designed for every season, these quality-made sheets will make her think of you every time she uses them. Choose between a sheet set (from $330, was $360) or duvet set (from $260, was $290).
Another linen option is Koala’s Le Linen Duvet Cover Set ($349), which comes with a duvet cover and two pillowcases, made from French flax. The material will keep you cool and dry on hot nights and get better with age.
For mums who love more of a silky feel in their sheets than linen, you might think about getting them a Signature Sateen Sheet Set (from $229) from Australian brand Ettitude, which includes a fitted sheet, flat sheet and two pillowcases. Made with sustainable organic bamboo lyocell, the sheet set has a cooling effect, adjusting to body temperature for a more comfy sleep. Choose from 15 colours to suit their bedroom aesthetic.
Jumper, Cardigan or Jacket
Depending where your Mum lives, temperatures are likely to have dropped slightly by Mother’s Day so, to help her prepare for that, add to her wardrobe a comfy jumper or cardigan. For the mum who loves walks in autumn or winter, get her a Lululemon Scuba Oversized Full Zip Hoodie ($149), which has practical front pockets and a cosy, roomy fit or take advantage of up to 60% off at THE ICONIC’s Mid-Season Sale, and grab her Calli’s Chloe Zip Jumper ($49, was $99.95).
Jac Cadeaux’s Cashmere & Wool French Racer Jumper ($250) is an investment piece, as is the oversized Elk Helgen Sweater ($169, was $249).
Spa Day
Give your mum a spa treatment to melt away her worries. Endota Spa’s Rejuvenate experience (from $295) will treat her to 120 minutes of goodness — creamy body scrub, warm oil cocoon, body massage and a hydrating facial.
Coffee Machine
For a java-loving mum, consider getting her a coffee machine. Smeg appliances are known for their minimalist designs and the Lavazza A Modo Mio Smeg ($349) is no exception. Using coffee capsules, the machine delivers authentic Italian espresso — exactly the kick a mum needs.
Sparkling Water Maker
Sparkling water is a great alternative to a sugary, carbonated drink, and you can let Mum make her own at home by getting her an easy-to-use SodaStream Duo Sparkling Water Machine ($299). The machine comes with both a dishwasher-safe glass bottle and a plastic one so she can take her fizzy water with her wherever she goes.
Blender
If your mum loves making soups or smoothies, she’ll appreciate a high-quality blender, something she’s likely not to splurge on herself. Get her an upgrade in the form of the Vitamix A3500i ($1699), a blender used by Jennifer Aniston, Lady Gaga and Zac Efron.
Candle
A Mother’s Day gift guide wouldn’t be complete without a mention of candles. Grab one for Mum from Glasshouse’s limited-edition Mother’s Day collection Touch the Sky ($59.95) — the collection also includes body bars, lotions and a scarf — or Glasshouse’s Gardenia Inoubliable Candle ($79.95), which has notes of gardenia and soft florals.
Or, grab her a candle from Diptyque, Feuille De Lavander Scented Candle ($103), which smells like a lavender field, or Peppermint Grove, Lychee and Peony ($44.95), which blends peach nectar, raspberries and lychees with peony petals.
Cleanse & Co’s crystal-topped candles are also a great shout. Choose from its Rose Quartz – loved and worthy, Amethyst – calm and centred and Rainbow Fluorite – clear & focused ($69 each), among others.
Nice Bottle of Booze
You can’t go wrong with a nice bottle of alcohol for a mum, especially if it comes in a pretty bottle (and, of course, provided they drink). Solento Organic Reposado Tequila 750ml ($123.99) has sweet notes of caramel and citrus from the nine months it’s aged in whisky barrels. It’s best served neat or over ice with a slice of lemon.
Kimono or Silky Pyjamas
Get your Mum out of her ratty robe and into a silky feel kimono. Bras N Things’ Midnight Palms Longline Wrap ($80, was $99.99) has a timeless tropical floral print and is versatile enough to be worn around the house or to bed.
Does your mum prefer pyjamas over a robe? Get her a matching set that’s luxe enough that she could even wear it under a blazer. This Silk Set in Rose by Souszy ($300) comes with a cami she can wear bra-free and matching pants, both made in sand-washed silk satin and, importantly, machine-washable.
Kitchenware
Whether your mum, wife or mother figure in your life likes cooking or not, no doubt they’d appreciate an upgrade to their kitchenware. Invest in a quality pot or pan for them from German-made Woll, which combines traditional craftsmanship with innovative technology.
Joseph Joseph’s range of cookware is non-stick and space-saving with a folding handle so it’ll fit in a drawer. It’s also durable with product testing showing they can last up to 20 years. Our pick from the range is this Ceramic Non-stick 20cm Frying Pan ($169.95). It can be used for frying, searing and sauteing and it’s finished in a midnight blue.
Go for a value set like the Twin FryPan set 24cm – 28cm ($299.95, was $599.95) or a single item like the Woll Saute Pan and Lid 24cm ($399.95) or FryPan, with detachable handle 20cm ($249.95).
Or, if you think the mums in your life are all set with pots and pans, go for oven mitts or tea towels instead, like this Pink/Red Squiggles Microfiber Towel ($35) from quirky homewares brand November Tango.
Sleepwear
One of the best ways to feel pampered is to slip into sumptuous sleepwear so why not give Mum that experience with a set for Mother’s Day? For a classic set, get her a Maeva Resort Stripe Long Set ($119, was $149). For silky, go for Bella Descanso Pyjama Set ($199.95). Or, for something more affordable, get this Atmos&here Rosalie Cami Pajama Set ($30, was $59.99).
Hair Dryers
Give your mum or wife the gift of looking like they got their hair professionally done even when they haven’t by getting them a quality hair tool. They can dry and style at the same time with Silver Bullet Showbiz Professional Oval Hot Air Brush ($159.95) or dry their hair super fast with Silver Bullet Evolution Professional Hair Dryer ($369.95) or Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer ($599).
Make-up or Skincare
While your mum likely has her picks for the foundations and concealers she uses, you can’t go wrong giving her a great mascara or a cleanser. Benefit Australia’s Bad Gal Bang Volumising Mascara ($48) will give her 36 hours of wear without budging, even if she goes in the water.
Get your mum into ingestible beauty with OPTY.NC – Ultimate 1.0 Complete Skin Food Elixir ($139), made with collagen and B Complex Vitamins. The powder has been tried and tested for proven results in increasing gut health and renewing skin.
Or, for affordable face skincare for Mum, try Urban Jungle’s Dust It Off Exfoliating Powder ($38) or Urban Jungle’s Melt Me Softly Cleansing Balm ($36).
Your mum will never say no to new skincare, especially if it promises to deliver incredible results. Australian brand ESK’s products use evidence-based ingredients to slow down aging, all repairing damage and managing a range of common skin concerns. Get Mum an individual bottle or a build-your-own or pre-built kit, like ESK Normal Skin Anti-Aging Kit ($369).
Perfume
One spritz of Diptyque’s Do Son Eau De Parfum 75ml ($321) promises to transport the wearer to Ha Long Bay, Vietnam. The sweet floral scent has notes of fresh orange, iris and rose, as well as amber wood and creamy musk as a finish.
Recreation Beauty’s Call Me Venus Rollerball Duo ($146) is a gorgeous rose and geranium eau de parfum that comes in a 50ml bottle to use at home and a 10ml roller for a fresh spritz on the go.
Sweet Treats
If your mum has a sweet tooth, get her a box of handmade chocolates. Australian chocolatier Koko Black is offering a range of chocolate boxes, with the option to customise the chocolate selection and personalise gift packaging. Get her a 25-piece box ($64.90). There’s also a special Four Pillars collaboration box combining her favourite gins with her favourite pralines ($49.90)
On a bit of a budget? Or already getting Mum an experience gift, but want to also get her something tangible? Treat her to some freshly-baked cookies from Bondi favourite Bennett St Dairy, now stocked at Woollies. Choose from dark chocolate or white chocolate macadamia.
