Since publishing this story, Network Ten has announced the death of MasterChef Australia judge Jock Zonfrillo on April 30, 2023. MasterChef Australia Secrets and Surprises will now premiere on Sunday, May 7, with the full support of Zonfrillo’s family.
MasterChef Australia: Secrets and Surprises is here, and it’s time to meet all the hopeful home cooks who will be competing for the win this season. One of the MasterChef Australia 2023 cast members and contestants is Robbie Cooper, a 65-year-old youth support worker from the Northern Territory.
Robbie’s Passion for Cooking
Robbie Cooper, a proud Iwaidja man from Darwin, is not only entering the MasterChef kitchen to showcase his cooking skills, but also to share his rich cultural heritage. With his ancestry spanning across the Asian and Torres Strait Islander communities, Robbie notes that his cooking style is a unique blend of Aboriginal Asian fusion.
Currently, Robbie works as a youth support worker in a supported bail program. He holds a Graduate Diploma in Indigenous Health Promotion, among other qualifications.
His love for cooking started early, learning from both his parents and community Aunties. Robbie is famed for his curries and chilli mud crab, and with a big family of 10 children, 14 grandchildren, and counting, catering for crowds is second nature to him.
As the eldest contestant in the competition, Robbie sees himself as an Uncle to the group, sharing his wisdom and knowledge.
With his deep understanding of flavour combinations and a passion for fresh produce, Robbie hopes to use this platform to not only showcase his cooking but also to celebrate and share his culture.

Robbie’s Dreams Beyond MasterChef Australia 2023
Robbie’s traditional land is the Wiligi Outstation in West Arnhem Land, where he loves to fish, hunt, collect oysters, and catch crabs.
He’s also cultivating a large vegetable patch, along with tropical fruit trees, with the aim of becoming self-sufficient.
Beyond competing as one of the MasterChef Australia 2023 cast members, Robbie intends to host food experiences on country. Robbie hopes to invite people to camp, catch, cook, connect, and learn about the oldest living culture on earth.
MasterChef Australia: Secrets and Surprises premieres Sunday, May 7 at 7.30pm, only on 10 and 10 Play on Demand.
