It’s been a long and winding journey, but Australian Idol is finally making its way back to screens in 2023.
The original singing reality competition series — which brought us legends like Guy Sebastian, Shannon Noll, Casey Donovan, Jessica Mauboy and Matt Corby — is currently casting the new season.
It’s early days yet, so there’s no word on who’ll be on the judging panel, but the show will be airing on Channel 7, which ran from 2003 to 2009 on Network 10. There’s also no word on who’ll be hosting the show, but with Osher GĂ¼nsberg firmly locked into his contracts with 10 for both The Bachelors and The Masked Singer Australia, it would be unlikely that he and James Mathison will be picking up where they left off.
If you fancy yourself the next singing sensation of Australia, and you’re between the ages of 15 and 28, you could be just what producers are looking for.

Rather than the open casting calls of the 00s, which saw thousands of hopefuls flock to auditions across Australia, the process will be a little different in 2022’s version of Australian Idol.

There are a few options. As a first step, you can either upload a video of yourself singing, or request a face-to-face Zoom call with one of the Idol producers.
To be successful in your application, you also need to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, for a time of at least two years.
You also need to be fully vaxxed and boosted against COVID — that’s three doses, not two — with all the valid vaccination certificates.
Finally, and probably most importantly, you can’t have any contract, arrangement or agreement with any other TV program, producer or record label. That is, no bouncing from The Voice to Idol, and no auditioning if you already have a deal in the works.
If your beautiful singing voice manages to wow the producers in the first round of auditions, then you’ll proceed into the next round, which is where you’ll face the judges directly.
