20 Movies To Watch at the Cinema This Year

If you’re a fan of the big screen, than you’re bound to love what’s in store for cinema this year. From the intoxicating smell of buttered popcorn paired with a choc top, to a reclining chair that holds your liquor of choice — it’s an experience that can’t be beat.

And then, there’s the added element of putting your phone away. No endless scrolling on Instagram while you sit through a film. In fact, switching it off to enjoy the cool, dark room and surround sound is a must.

We have a list of 20 of the best films to watch in cinemas this year, so get comfy and start adding to your watch-list.

 1. 1917

Sam Mendes’ World War 1 film, 1917, follows a real-time journey of two young British soldiers are given a mission to hand-deliver a message that will save the lives of thousands. The film was filmed with long takes and elaborately choreographed moving camera shots to give the effect of one continuous take. And the acting? Impeccable.
In cinemas January 9.

2. Bad Boys for Life

25 years after Bad Boys, 17 years after Bad Boys II, Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett
are back for one last ride.

In Bad Boys for Life, Marcus is trying to step back and spend more time with his family by announcing his retirement, but when a dangerous threat emerges that endangers Mike’s life — it pulls Marcus back in… after all, Mike is family too, and he’s not going to let Mike go on that mission alone.

The cops team up, with the newly created elite team AMMO of the Miami police department, to take down the vicious leader of a Miami drug cartel, Armando Armas (Jacob Scipio).
In cinemas January 16.

3. Bombshell

Starring an all-star cast including Margot Robbie, Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron,  Bombshell follows the events that ultimately brought down media mogul Roger Ailes after years of sexual misconduct and abuse of his power. The film has received an incredible 14 nominations during awards season, making it a must-see.
In cinemas January 16.

4. A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood

Tom Hanks, winner of the Cecile b. DeMille Award at the 77th Annual Golden Globes, stars as Mr Rogers, an American childhood icon. A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood follows a journalist (Matthew Rhys — The Americans) who is sent to profile Mr Rogers, confronting his own past as he learns more about the figure.

5. The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse is an art-style film starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe, follows two men who are lighthouse keepers, who slowly start to go mad when they are stranded on a remote island.
In cinemas February 6.

6. A Quiet Place II

Fan of A Quiet Place? Then you’ll want to see the follow up to John Krasinski’s first hit film, A Quiet Place IIThe Abbotts, well, those who survived the last film, must now face the terrors of the outside world as they continue their fight for survival in silence — quickly realising that the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats to their existence. In cinemas March 19.

7. Mulan (Live-Action)

This live-action remake of the popular Disney cartoon, follows Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, who steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Mulan is tested and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. Mulan is more faithful to the Chinese legend it was based on, about a female warrior who fights in the army disguised as a man.
In cinemas March 26.

8. James Bond: No Time To Die

Since we last saw Bond (Daniel Craig) at the end of Spectre, the MI5 spy decided to leave the spy game to live it up in Jamaica. But in No Time To Die, his peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright) from the CIA turns up asking for help. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain (Rami Malek) armed with dangerous new technology.
In cinemas April 8.

9. Black Widow

Black Widow is the new installment from the Marvel Cinema Universe (MCU), which reveals the back story of Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson). Focusing on the time period between Captain America: Civil War (which is when we saw Romanoff go on the run, after helping Captain America) and Avengers: Infinity War, it follows her as she returns home to Russia.
In cinemas April 30.

10. Fast and Furious: F9

It’s back. Again. Fast and Furious: F9 is headed to the cinemas in 2020, starring Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto, Michelle Rodriguez as Letty Ortiz, leading an all-star cast. No official synopsis has been released yet, but at least we know what to expect. Some seriously fast cars.
In cinemas May 21.

11. I Am Woman

Australian actress Tilda Cobham-Hervey stars as Helen Reddy in I Am Woman. The story follows Helen Reddy, who in 1966 landed in New York with her three-year-old daughter, a suitcase and $230 in her pocket. After meeting Jeff Wald (Evan Peters) she falls in love, and within five years she was one of the biggest superstars of her time, and at the forefront of the 1970s feminist movement. Of course, her song I Am Woman features, a song which spurred a generation of women to fight for change. (May 21)

12. Wonder Woman 1984

Wonder Woman 1984, is a follow up to 2017’s popular film, Wonder Woman, and is set forty years later. It’s now the Cold War and Gadot’s Diana Prince has lost many of her friends — a common happenstance for someone with immortality. Prince befriends an archaeologist named Barbara Minerva (Wiig) who by undertaking an ancient ritual, ends up channeling an ancient goddess known by the name as Cheetah. What begins as a friendship, quickly turns into an all-out battle of epic proportions as Wonder Woman fights to save the world.
In cinemas June 4.

13. In The Heights

From Musical genius Lin-Manuel Miranda and director John M Chu (Crazy Rich Asians), In The Heightsis a film adaptation of the hit Broadways show – which is set in a Hispanic neighbourhood. There’s singing, dancing and of course, a bit of romance.
In cinemas June 25.

14. Top Gun: Maverick

Thirty-three years after Top Gun premiered in theatres, Maverick is back and there’s a brand new trailer.

Top Gun: Maverickwhich premieres in cinema June 25 2020, sees Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, back where he belongs — pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot.

In this new installment, Maverick finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialised mission.

Here, he encounters Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (played by Anthony Edwards).
In cinemas June 25.

15. Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Over three decades ago, Dan Akroyd, Harold Ramis and Bill Murray starred the very first Ghostbusters.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is set in the present day and builds on the events of the first two films, with a new generation of busters. The story follows the family as they move to Oklahoma, into a property once owned by Callie’s father, she does have a direct connection with the OG Ghostbusters. Starring Carrie Coon (The Sinner), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) and McKenna Grace (Gifted); the trio play Mother, Callie (Coon) and children, Trevor (Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Grace).
In cinemas July 2.

16. The Witches

Anne Hathaway stars as the Grand High Witch in the 2020 remake of the Roald Dahl classic, The Witches. Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci and Chris Rock join Hathaway as we watch a young boy be turned into a mouse by some Witches. We suggest watching the original before heading to the cinema.
In cinemas August 8.

17. West Side Story

Based on the hit musical of the same name and a remake of the 1961 classic, West Side Story follows The Sharks and the Jets as they fight over their turf. The story is a musical version of Romeo and Juliet, and will star Ansel Elgort, Corey Stoll, Rachel Ziegler with an appearance by Rita Moreno, who played Anita in the 1961 version.
In cinemas December 26.

18. Rebecca

A remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 film, Rebecca is a psychological thriller adapted from the novel by Daphne du Maurier. A newly married woman (Lily James) moves into her new husband’s house (Armie Hammer), a home still haunted by his dead wife. Spooky.
Release date TBC.

19. The Trial Of The Chicago 7

The true story of a group of seven people who are charged by the Government with conspiracy to riot during the counterculture movement against the Vietnam War, Alan Sorkin’s The Trial Of The Chicago 7 has an all-star cast, including: Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jeremy Strong, Yahya Abdul Mateen II and Frank Langella.
Release date TBC.

20. Legally Blonde 3

She’s back! Reese Witherspoon is back as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde 3. There’s no synopsis, release date or trailer yet, however, we do know that some of the original cast are returning. Fabulous!
