Can you believe we’re almost halfway through the year? It feels like just yesterday we were tuned into the 2024 Academy Awards, but already, it’s time to turn our attention to the best movies of 2024.
The beginning of the year saw the release of the last few Oscar contenders of 2024, with hot titles like Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers and May December hitting cinemas. Next came the belated release of titles like Dune: Part Two, Challengers and Force of Nature: The Dry 2, all of which were pushed back by the 2023 Hollywood strikes.
We’ve also seen the release of some great indie films, like The Iron Claw, Love Lies Bleeding and Monkey Man this year, and the release of Civil War has marked A24’s biggest cinematic release to date.
Of course, it’s still only June, and there are plenty of big releases on the horizon in 2024, including the final chapter of Ti West’s X trilogy, MaxXine, as well as Gladiator 2, Sundance darling A Real Pain, and Sean Baker’s recent Palme d’Or winner, Anora. The Cannes Film Festival also marked the premiere of Francis Ford Coppola’s long-awaited, wildly divisive Megalopolis, as well as plenty of buzzy titles we’re adding to our watchlists, like The Apprentice, The Substance, Emilia Pérez, Wild Diamond and My Sunshine.
Without further ado, here are the best movies of 2024 so far, and the most hotly anticipated films that are still to come this year.
The Best Movies of 2024
All of Us Strangers
Directed by: Andrew Haigh
Written by: Andrew Haigh, based on the novel by Taichi Yamada
Starring: Andrew Scott, Paul Mescal, Carter John Grout
Synopsis: A screenwriter drawn back to his childhood home enters into a fledgling relationship with a mysterious neighbour as he then discovers his parents appear to be living just as they were on the day they died, 30 years before.
Where to watch: Streaming on Disney+
Adapted from Taichi Yamada’s Strangers, All of Us Strangers is a striking, haunting, and deeply moving film about love, grief, loneliness, and the nature of the human condition. Make sure you’ve got tissues handy — when I caught this at the Adelaide Film Festival in October last year, the whole cinema was audibly sniffling.
Anatomy of a Fall
Directed by: Justine Triet
Written by: Justine Triet and Arthur Harari
Starring: Sandra Hüller, Swann Arlaud, Milo Machado Graner
Synopsis: A woman is suspected of her husband’s murder, and their blind son faces a moral dilemma as the main witness.
Where to watch: Streaming on Stan
A gripping and tense courtroom drama, Anatomy of a Fall features star performances from its cast, from Best Actress nominee Sandra Hüller to the entire supporting cast — human or not. Surely if there was an Oscar for best animal performance, there’s no question it would go to Messi, the border collie who plays Snoop in the film.

Challengers
Directed by: Luca Guadagnino

Where to watch: Rent on Prime Video
With a tight, smart script and star-making performances from stars Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist, Challengers is set to become one of the hottest films of 2024. It’s got an enticing love triangle, flashy tennis sequences, and plot twists that will keep you guessing, this is a film you won’t want to miss.

Starring: Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Jesse Plemons, Nick Offerman
Synopsis: In the near future, a team of journalists travel across the United States during a rapidly escalating civil war that has engulfed the entire nation.
Where to watch: Rent on Prime Video
One of the more stressful cinematic experiences I’ve had recently, I jumped out of my seat on three separate occasions while watching this. The film is gripping, gruelling, and grim to watch, but Kirsten Dunst is fantastic, and whether you like it or not, Civil War is sure to linger in your mind long after you’ve left the theatre.
Dream Scenario
Directed by: Kristoffer Borgli
Written by: Kristoffer Borgli
Starring: Lily Bird, Nicolas Cage, Julianne Nicholson
Synopsis: A hapless family man finds his life turned upside down when millions of strangers suddenly start seeing him in their dreams. When his nighttime appearances take a nightmarish turn, Paul is forced to navigate his newfound stardom.
Where to watch: Streaming on Netflix
If you enjoyed Nicolas Cage in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, you’ll likely enjoy Dream Scenario as well. Cage is on point once again in this absurdist horror/satire that takes on cancel culture and celebrity worship — without becoming exhausting.
Dune: Part Two

Written by: Denis Villeneuve and Jon Spaihts, based on the novel by Frank Herbert
Starring: Florence Pugh, Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson
Synopsis: Paul Atreides unites with Chani and the Fremen while seeking revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family.
Where to watch: Rent on Prime Video
After being delayed for release by last year’s Hollywood strikes, Dune: Part Two has proven itself to be well worth the wait. A visually stunning, technical masterpiece, Dune is the kind of film that deserves to be seen on the big screen, where it can be fully appreciated for all its accomplishments.
The Fall Guy
Directed by: David Leitch
Written by: Drew Pearce, based on the television series created by Glen A. Larson
Starring: Ryan Gosling, Hannah Waddingham, Emily Blunt

Where to watch: Rent on Prime Video
A high octane, high quality action comedy starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt? Sign us up! The Fall Guy is smart, funny, and a whole lot of fun. Beyond that, it will also leave you with a new level of respect for the stunt people who pull off the death-defying action sequences we love to see on the big screen.

Molly Manning Walker’s directorial debut, How to Have Sex, is a coming of age story that grapples with the issue of consent in a world of clubbing and hook up culture. With a powerhouse performance from newcomer Mia McKenna-Bruce at its centre, How to Have Sex is one of 2024’s unmissable films.
The Iron Claw
Directed by: Sean Durkin
Written by: Sean Durkin
Starring: Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson
Synopsis: The true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, who made history in the intensely competitive world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s.

A powerful film with Zac Efron’s powerhouse performance at its centre, The Iron Claw is a gripping, tragic drama that examines how masculinity and family dynamics impact both father and sons.

Where to watch: Streaming on Stan
Sofia Coppola steps back into her zone with Priscilla, showing us the flipside to Baz Luhrmann’s frenzied Elvis extravaganza. Priscilla is a small, quiet, melancholic look at Priscilla’s life, with the pitch-perfect combination of glamour and loneliness we’ve come to expect from a Coppola film.
