Gundagai is a four drive from Sydney, five hour drive from Melbourne, and a two-hour drive from Canberra, making it a great spot to meet interstate friends and family. As far as country towns go, Gundagai is small and remote. There’s not much in the way of shops, but what it lacks in brick and mortar, it makes up for in boutique wineries and wide open spaces, rolling verdant hills, and outdoor adventures.
Whether you’re visiting the emerging wine region or simply want a country escape, Gundagai is the place to go. Think of it as one of those remote regions where you can hear yourself think. The locals are friendly, the food is great, and the stargazing is magical. Take it all in with these stylish stays in Gundagai.
Kimo Estate
Kimo Estate is synonymous with Gundagai. Chances are you’ve heard of Kimo Estate before you heard the words Gundagai. This stunning farm offers a range of accommodations from a cute Victorian cottage to a reinvented shearers’ quarters. Although, the most popular choice has to be the charming A-frame eco huts perched on the hills, offering sweeping views of the vista and sunsets. The huts are ideal for a couple, and each sits on its own hilltop, so you have ultimate privacy. The wood-fired hot tub is great for soaking in a sunset over the hills. It’s completely remote, so don’t expect any cell service. Instead, revel in being off-grid with a loved one and take in the nature surrounding you.
Nimbo Fork Lodge
Sitting on the fork of the Tumut River and Nimbo Creek is Nimbo Fork Lodge, a luxury escape in one of the state’s most beautiful regional destinations. Combining country charm with luxury, and a dash of raw beauty, this lodge offers riverside cottages and suites for guests looking for a romantic escape. The cottages are standalone buildings with views, a back deck, and a bathtub. The suites, added in early 2023, are located inside the main lodge and are great for short stays. Guests have easy access to the bar and restaurant, yet each suite has its own views and feeling of privacy. The onsite restaurant is run by Three Blue Ducks, known for plating fresh, local produce packed with flavour. Think farm-to-plate ethos.
Flash Jacks of Gundagai
When it comes to staying in town, there’s no better place than Flash Jacks. It doesn’t sound fancy, but when you step inside, you’re instantly transported to a stylish country-style home with beautiful bay windows, light-flooded rooms, and simple furnishings. Kimo Estate owns the boutique hotel, so expect the same great service and comforting stay as you would in the A-frame cabins. The Bay Window Deluxe room is by far the most stylish, with lots of light and space. Although all of the rooms have their own charm and unique style.
