Sticking Around for Easter? Here’s What You Can Do Near You

Hoyts cinema

If you haven’t already made plans for Easter, it’s time to hop to it. This year, Good Friday falls on Friday, April 7, while Easter Sunday lands Sunday, April 9. Many of us also have Monday, April 10 off, with it being a public holiday, giving us a full four days off.

If you’ve yet to make plans for that time and are wondering what your options are based on what’s even open, we’ve got you covered. Ahead, an overview of where you can and what you can do (and where you can’t and what you can’t do) on Easter long weekend across the country.

Hoyts Cinemas

Are Hoyts cinemas open over the Easter break? Yep! If you’re keen to see a flick, like John Wick: Chapter 4, Scream VI or Creed III, you’ll be pleased to know that Hoyts will have screening times throughout the four-day break. As always, check movie session times online and, if possible, book your tickets ahead of time, to avoid disappointment.

Restaurants, Bars or Cafés

For the most part, most venues will resume normal trading hours, apart from on Good Friday. On that day, venues with liquor licenses can sell alcohol, with a meal, between 12pm to 10pm.

Many venues that are usually shut on Mondays will stay in line with that and will be closed on Easter Monday. Check online or call ahead to avoid disappointment.

Keep in mind that any venues open on public holidays, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, may add on a surcharge on meals and drinks served on those days.

Bottle Shops

Most bottle shops across the country will be closed on Good Friday. On Easter Saturday and Easter Monday, many will be open, but may operate on reduced trading hours.

On Easter Sunday, however, some bottle shops will be open in WA, QLD, SA, VIC, ACT and TAS, but all will be closed in NSW. Again, check online or call ahead.

Shopping Centres

Major shopping centres like Westfield and independent shops will remain closed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Many will be open on Easter Saturday, as it isn’t a public holiday.

Supermarkets

Most major supermarkets will be closed on Good Friday. They’ll reopen on Saturday, April 16, which, again, isn’t a public holiday.

On Easter Sunday, most suburban supermarkets are closed in NSW and SA, however, there may be a few exceptions in inner city areas. In Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, ACT and Western Australia, many major supermarkets will be open all day.

Post Offices

Most post offices will also be closed from Good Friday to Easter Monday. No mail or parcel deliveries, including Express Post items, during this time.

If you send an Express Post delivery on Thursday, April 6, expect it to be received by the recipient on Tuesday, April 11.
