The Invisible Man was only released around the world on February 27, but it has already raked in a huge $74.8 Million AUD ($49 million USD).
The psychological thriller is an Australian-American co-production that was filmed in Sydney and directed, written and produced by Leigh Whannell, a Melbourne filmmaker.
While it made $2.1 million at the Australian box office, it was the US opening weekend that really made an impression bringing in $29 million USD ($44.2 million AUD).
Whannell’s film was produced by Jason Blum and his house of horrors production company, Blumhouse Productions.
The film’s impressive earnings was made even more poignant by the fact that it was produced on such a low budget.
According to Variety, the flick cost just $7 million USD ($10.6 million AUD) to produce, earning it a $42 million USD profit one week in.
In an interview with the outlet, Whannells said that using a low budget, made the film more realistic and credits producer Blumhouse for “how to milk every dollar out of the budget you have.”
“A lot of times when you see movies with huge budgets, the CG really calls attention to itself,” he said.
“You’re so aware that you’re watching something that was created in a computer. What I’m trying to do is something completely different.”
The Invisible Man is a modern take on the novel by H.G. Wells and follows Cecilia Kass (Elizabeth Moss, The Handmaids Tale), a woman who is being hunted by her abusive ex-boyfriend.
When he dies by suicide, she has to prove her sanity and that she’s being stalked by someone that nobody can see.
The film has received a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes and the critic’s consensus?
“Smart, well-acted, and above all scary, The Invisible Man proves that sometimes, the classic source material for a fresh reboot can be hiding in plain sight.”
Eeep!
