Dare to Say His Name: Candyman Gets 2021 Release Date

Candyman

Prepare yourself.

“The legend says, when you say his name five times while looking in the mirror, he appears in the reflection and he kills you…”

And that’s exactly what the Candyman does in this trailer for the remake of Candyman.

Due to be released on August 26, 2021, and from Academy Award-winning producer Jordan Peele, comes a “spiritual sequel” to the mega-hit 1992 urban legend.

If horror is your thing, you’ll be in gore heaven — but if you have a fear of invisible serial killers then you might want to side-step away from this story.

In fact, at a screening of the trailer in the US (and reported by Deadline), director Nia DaCosta revealed that she really loves gore — and working with Peele was “really fun” because of their different “horror aesthetics.”

“Jordan is really brilliant at not showing everything and my instinct is to do the exact opposite,” she said.

Scored with a haunting version of Say My Name by Destiny’s Child, the trailer more than teases the deadly character who dares to kill anyone who utters his name.

And according to DaCosta, the film will also focus on the gentrification of the North Side Chicago neighbourhood.

“Gentrification is what helped us to re-imagine the story because Cabrini-Green is gone,” she said.

“The movie from the ’90s has a vision of Cabrini-Green where it’s sort of on its way to being knocked down.”

The screenplay was co-written by Peele (who wrote thrillers Get Out and Us) and Win Rosenfeld and stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Us), Teyonah Parris (If Beale Street Could Talk/WandaVision), Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (Misfits) and Colman Domingo (Fear the Walking Dead).

While the trailer seems true to its core, there’s one question left unanswered. Will Tony Todd be returning?

“[Todd] is iconic and what we have done with the film is…great and I don’t want to give anything away,” DaCosta said.

Guess we’ll have to see it for ourselves!

Candyman opens in cinemas on June 11.
