“Why would you have an award show in the middle of a pandemic? No, seriously, I’m asking — WHY are we having an award show in the middle of a pandemic?” Jimmy Kimmel asked at the beginning of the 72nd Annual Emmy Awards.

However, the show did indeed go on with only a handful of physical presenters at the studio and all of the nominees and winners watching on from the comfort of their own homes.

Netflix’s Schitt’s Creek swept up the first seven awards of the night winning every single Emmy in the comedy categories including Best Comedy, Best Actor in a Comedy for Eugene Levy, Best Actress in a Comedy for Catherine O’Hara, Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy for Dan Levy and Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for Annie Murphy.

Other highlights included a mini-Friends reunion with Lisa Kudrow and Courteney Cox joining Jennifer Aniston on Zoom. “We’ve been living together since 1994”, Aniston quipped.

Zendaya won Best Actress in a Drama for her role in Euphoria — the youngest ever winner in the category. While it was an inspiring win, her family and friends reactions were deserving of an Emmy themselves.

Succession took home the top award for the evening with best drama series with Jeremy Strong, who plays Kendall Roy, taking home Best Actor.

At the end of the ceremony, Kimmel announced that the Academy had raised $2.8 million USD ($3.82 million AUD) for the Save the Children fund in the US.

Now that the awards have officially concluded, it’s time to find out who has taken home the top prize at the 72nd annual Emmy Awards.
