In 2013, Mundine claimed that homosexuality was incompatible with his First Nations beliefs. He believed that the series Redfern Now shouldn’t have depicted a First Nations man being gay.
This opinion has been lambasted by many First Nations people, including Rachel Perkins. At this time, Perkins was the producer of Redfern Now. She’s also the founder of Blackfella Films.
“Saying gay people and Aboriginality don’t go together denies all of the identity of those people,” Perkins said. “It’s insulting to them, it’s inappropriate.”
In 2022, Mundine was a strong critic of the COVID-19 lockdown laws. On 25 July, he attended a large and illegal anti-lockdown protest in Sydney.
