To officially end award season for 2020 the 92nd Annual Academy Awards celebrated the very best in film for the last year.
The Academy voted on 25 categories, choosing the very best in acting, cinematography, makeup, and score.
To open the show, Janelle Monáe and Billy Porter performed a medley of songs including “A Beautiful Day in The Neighbourhood” and razzle-dazzled with colourful costumes and high glamour.
Monáe also used the time to give special mention to “all the women who directed phenomenal films,” and said that she was “proud to stand here as a black, queer artist.”
Comedians Steve Martin and Chris Rock then took to the stage for some opening remarks, making a few digs directed at The Academy (we presume?!), and joking that it was “such an incredible demotion” for them to just be doing a monologue since they had each hosted the Oscars previously.
With no host again for the second year running, presenters took to the stage to announce the winners including Mahershala Ali, Timothée Chalamet, Olivia Colman, Will Ferrel, Gal Gadot, Rami Malek, Lin-Manuel Miranda, James Corden and Rebel Wilson (dressed in their Cats costumes), Penélope Cruz, Keanu Reeves, and Sigourney Weaver.
Brad Pitt was the first winner of the night, taking home the Best Supporting Actor award for his role as Cliff Booth in Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood with Laura Dern, the firm favourite, taking out the Best Supporting Actress for Marriage Story.
Best Actor went to Joaquin Phoenix for Joker and Best Actress to Renée Zellweger for Judy.
Phoenix used the opportunity to address inequality, environmentalism and animal rights, explaining how “we’ve become very disconnected from the natural world”.
“Whether we’re talking about gender inequality or racism, or queer rights or indigenous rights, or animal rights, we’re talking about the fight against injustice,” he said.
Parasite was the big winner of the evening taking out Best Picture, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Screenplay.
Other winners were Taika Waititi for Jojo Rabbit and “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Rocketman by Elton John and Bernie Taupin for Best Original Song.
Grammy winner Billie Eilish and brother Finneas O’Connell also took to the stage to sing a beautiful cover of “Yesterday” by The Beatles for the “In Memoriam” segment. The tribute opened with Kobe Bryant and ended with Kirk Douglas, who passed away on February 5 at 103.
