Oscars 2020: Parasite Wins Best Picture Making History In the Process

South Korean film Parasite has taken out Best Picture at the 92nd Annual Academy Awards, the first every film not in the English language to win Best Picture.

The film, directed by Bong Joon-ho, also took out Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Screenplay.

During her acceptance speech, Kwak Sin Ae, producer of the film was “speechless”.

“We never imagined this to ever happen. We are so happy…I feel like a very opportune moment in history is happening right now. I express my deepest gratitude and respect for all the members of the Academy for making this decision.”

Director Joon-ho became the second film-maker ever to win a directing prize for a foreign-language film and during his speech for best director, paid tribute to Scorsese saying that when he was young he “carved deep into my heart” followed by a Scorsese quote: “The most personal is the most creative.”

He also honoured another fellow nominee, Quentin Tarantino:  “Quentin, I love you.”

Parasite, won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes film festival in May, and since then has won a slew of awards including Best Foreign-Language film at the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs and Bong winning a number awards for direction.

The film centres around a poor yet united family who bluff their way into the lives of a wealthy Seoul household.
