2020 was a tough year for many reasons that do not need to be explained. However, it was also a great year for the Australian film industry, as Hollywood productions flooded our shores thanks to our admirable response to the pandemic (which feels like an odd thing to say now).
With those Hollywood productions came Hollywood actors—including Matt Damon, who was here filming Thor: Love and Thunder along with Chris Hemsworth (obviously), Russell Crowe, Karen Gillan, Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, Chris Pratt, Melissa McCarthy, Sam Neill, Sean Gunn, Jaimie Alexander and Christian Bale.
Damon has now confirmed that he will, indeed, be playing Fake Loki once more in the Marvel follow-up, after speculation around which character he would be portraying.
During a U.S. interview with SiriusXM host Jess Cagle, Damon said that he wasn’t sure if his role in Love and Thunder was supposed to be kept under wraps saying, “I don’t know if it’s secret or not though everybody knows. I went down there to shoot.
“I think they sussed it out because paparazzi took pictures of us so that they sussed out what we were doing. We were kind of reprising a cameo that we, that Luke Hemsworth and I, did in the last one. And we had a ball and so Taika [Waititi] had us back again, to kind of run that joke back and upgrade it a little bit.”
Of course, you’ll remember that Damon also appeared in Thor: Ragnarok as an Asgardian assuming the identity of Loki in a re-enactment of his supposed death in the second film while Hemsworth’s brother Luke took on the role of Thor and Sam Neill played Odin.
Damon can currently be seen in the drama film Stillwater, as an oil rig worker named Bill Baker who travels from Oklahoma, US, to Marseille, France to see his daughter (Abigail Breslin) who has been accused of a murder she claims she didn’t commit. The plot was inspired by the true story of Amanda Knox.
The Bourne Idenity star’s involvement in the film was not the only one that had drawn some speculation, with fans curious to know who Crowe would be playing also.
Earlier this year it was revealed that the Oscar-winner was joining the cast of the Marvel blockbuster as Zeus, the god of the sky. According to Deadline, “the hope was to surprise fans with this fun cameo when the film was released” but then Crowe, like Damon, was papped in Sydney hanging out with the film’s extensive and star-studded cast.
“I’m going to ride up to Disney Fox Studios and around about 9:15, I shall be Zeus!” Crowe told the Joy Breakfast Radio Show joked at the time. “It’s for Thor. It’s my last day of Zeus-ing about, and I’m going to enjoy it.”
And we shall enjoy watching it when the time comes.
Thor: Love and Thunder is slated for theatrical release on May 6, 2022.
