Halfway Between Sydney and Melbourne, Mallacoota Should Be Your Next Road Trip Destination

A view of the Mallacoota Inlet to showcase the best accommodation options in Mallacoota

Are you looking for an off-the-beaten-track destination that will leave you spellbound with its natural beauty? Look no further than Mallacoota. Located in the heart of East Gippsland, Victoria, this hidden gem is a slice of paradise waiting to be explored.

Mallacoota is blessed with an abundance of natural wonders, including pristine beaches, breathtaking lakes, and lush forests. One of its most famous attractions is the Mallacoota Inlet, a vast system of lakes and rivers that flows into the ocean. This stunning natural wonder is a haven for water sports enthusiasts, with kayaking, boating, and fishing among the popular activities.

But the Mallacoota experience doesn’t end there. The town is surrounded by the Croajingolong National Park, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve that offers visitors the opportunity to explore its diverse flora and fauna. This park is a nature lover’s paradise, with plenty of opportunities to spot kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, and a variety of bird species.

The beaches in Mallacoota are also a major drawcard. From the popular Betka Beach to the secluded Quarry Beach, there’s a stretch of sand to suit every taste. The town’s Bastion Point is famous for its stunning views and excellent surf conditions, making it a must-visit for surfers and beach lovers.

But Mallacoota isn’t just about the great outdoors – the town also has a rich history and cultural heritage that’s worth exploring. The Mallacoota Arts Council hosts regular exhibitions and events, showcasing the work of local artists and musicians. The town’s Maritime Museum is another must-visit, with exhibits that highlight the area’s seafaring history.

You may remember the town as being one of the most devastated regions during the Black Summer bushfires. The community here was ravaged by monstrous blazes and is still in the process of rebuilding. As if you needed another excuse to stop by and spend some money in the area.

In short, Mallacoota is a destination that will captivate and inspire you. Its natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and endless outdoor activities make it a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic Australian experience.

Mallacoota doesn’t boast any five-star resorts or ultra-lux rentals. It’s a much more laid-back kind of place. What it does have, though, is some very cool and unique places to rent, many of which can be found on Airbnb. Here we’ve rounded up the best of what’s on offer in the region.

Free bird seed to bring in the beautiful locals during sunset is provided.

For something truly unique, you can book a stay at the assistant lighthouse keeper’s cottage on Gabo Island.
