Marvel Fans Have Long Suspected Loki Is Gender-Fluid and, Happily, They Are Right

Loki Tom Hiddleston

The character of Loki Laufeyson has been confirmed as being gender-fluid, with a new trailer for the Disney+ series referencing their sex as “fluid” at the end of the clip.

Loki, who is played by Tom Hiddleston in the Marvel films and upcoming series, has had their sex questioned before, thanks to both the androgynous Asgardian’s shapeshifting abilities, and a reference to them by their father, Odin, as both his “son” and “daughter” in the 2014 comic book Thor & Loki: The Tenth Realm.

Loki follows the God of Mischief as they embark on a journey into the headquarters of the Time Variance Authority, a mysterious organisation that monitors time. Once there, they are enlisted by Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson) to rectify the timeline they disturbed when using the Tesseract throughout The Infinity Saga. The ensuing adventure sends Loki hurtling through history.

In an earlier trailer released for the series, it also appears as though Loki will also be making a return to Asgard which you might remember was destroyed in Thor: Ragnarok.

Of course, with the series having a strong focus on time travel and the traversing of multiple timelines, it’s not inconceivable that Loki and company visit Asgard in the past when it was still thriving.

While Loki is a standalone series, good films to watch in order to get to know this iteration of Loki (who is different from the one featured in Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok) include 2011’s Thor, 2012’s The Avengers and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.

Eagle-eyed fans also noticed the appearance of what seems to be a Skrull in the trailer, in a scene where Loki is escorted by agents.

Skrulls are extraterrestrial shapeshifters who have been seen in Captain Marvel, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and WandaVision and will be the focus of an upcoming Marvel series called Secret Invasion which stars Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as the Skrull named Talos.

In an interview with Deadline, director and executive producer Kate Herron revealed the series was heavily influenced by legendary filmmaker David Fincher — and that his films Se7en and Zodiac had beena big influence in the writer’s room”.

The series also stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sophia Di Martino, Wunmi Mosaku and Richard E. Grant. So, when is Loki coming out in Australia? It premieres Wednesday, June 9 on Disney+.

According to Gizmodo, the six-part series will likely air between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. AEST on Wednesdays, with the finale landing on the platform on July 14.
