The Good Place star and body positivity warrior Jameela Jamil will next take on the role of Marvel villain Titania, in the upcoming She-Hulk series for Disney+.
The show stars Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters — who is Bruce Banner’s cousin. In the comic books, Walter takes on the Hulk’s superpowers after receiving an emergency blood transfusion from Banner. Mark Ruffalo will also appear along with Tim Roth, who played the villain in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk.
Meanwhile, the character of Titania dates back to 1984’s Secret Wars No. 3. Titania — aka Mary MacPherran — gained super strength and endurance after being taken to an alien planet where Marvel’s heroes and villains had been transported to battle it out, becoming She-Hulk’s rival.
She-Hulk will mark Jamil’s first major television role since The Good Place — in which she played socialite Tahani Al-Jamil — wrapped in January 2020. The British actress and activist is a prominent face in the body positivity and mental health space and will next lend her voice talents to the Rugrats reboot which also stars Natalie Morales. She will also be a headliner at the Vivid 2021 festival, appearing via an exclusive live-streamed talk with Jamila Rizvi to explore the need for greater diversity and inclusion in media.
The series marks another of the properties in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to get the TV show treatment on Disney+.
The streaming service enjoyed huge success with WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and most recently debuted the standalone series Loki starring Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson.
After years of speculation, the God of Mischief’s sex was confirmed in a trailer released prior to the show’s launch, with eagle-eyed viewers noticing a document that specified the character as genderfluid.
