The IKEA and LEGO Collab Finally Has a Launch Date

They say teamwork makes the dream work, and this collaboration between IKEA and LEGO is surely proof.

The Swedish flat-packed furniture giant and Danish toy company teamed up for a playful storage solution they call Bygglek, which translates from Swedish to ‘construction game’.

The Bygglek collection consists of a series of storage boxes that are lined with LEGO studs on the top and front of the build, and there’s a special LEGO brick set as part of the range, too.

“People can store their stories inside them, and proudly display their creations on top of them,” says IKEA in a press release.

“The new Bygglekcollection aims to be a foundation for play in the home and a way for people to let their imagination run wild and build their creations — all whilst reducing clutter.”

There are four products in the range: A small set of three boxes, two larger sets of boxes, and a 201-piece LEGO bricks set to spark an imaginative play experience. We’re unsure exactly what this looks like yet, but images would indicate kids (both little and big) could build a sofa, bed or kitchen for the two LEGO figures in the set. Plus, give them a LEGO banana and hotdog when they get hungry.

The boxes are expected to be a hit with parents, who may be fed up with stepping on bricks in the middle of the night. The Bygglek collection provides a secure place for players to store their creations without having to dismantle them between sessions.

Even better, the box itself can be incorporated in the play. “The box itself can be a house, a swimming pool, a sports arena,” said LEGO designer Rasmus Buch Løgstrup in a press address, adding: “There is no right or wrong.”

Like almost everything else from IKEA, the sets will come flat-packed, only with no instructions. They were made to be so easy to assemble, that even children can do it without help.

The Bygglek collection will be available Australia wide at IKEA stores on February 17, 2021, from $20.
