We Need to Talk About This IKEA Cushion That’s Also a Wearable Blanket

IKEA can do no wrong, with the Swedish furniture giant dripping collection after collection of home-hacking, life-improving, chic and sustainable pieces.

But while just about every one of its new items prompts a round of applause — be it the IKEA bag bucket hat or artist collaboration with Sabine Marcelis — every now and then, a new product is revealed to really take our breath away. Today, it’s the Fältmal cushion.

But it’s not just a cushion. This is a pillow that transforms via a zipper to instantly become a wearable blanket with sleeves that’s both warm and cosy, and wildly chic. We’re not joking, it’s a fashion statement we’d happily make in the winter months, and that model above is proof.

And there’s more! The blanket can be zipped up to become a sleeping bag too, making it an ideal camping staple. Every seasoned camper knows how important space is when sleeping outdoors, so the fact this item can serve three key functions and is made from durable materials, means its all the more practical.

IKEA describes the Fältmal as a cushion and large body quilt “that keeps you warm and comfy when travelling, relaxing in the hammock or cuddling up in the sofa. The genius, button fastening keeps it from sliding off when you reach for your coffee.”

Easy on the eyes, but also the environment, the cushion/quilt is made with a recycled polyester filling, which helps IKEA to consume less new raw materials and lower its environmental footprint.

“By 2030, we want all materials in our products to be recycled or renewable, and sourced in responsible ways,” IKEA says in the product description.

The Fältmal cushion is available in some global stores, including France and the US, however has not yet landed in Australian stores, though a new collection is just around the corner. Here’s hoping your new cosy home companion makes up part of the new drop.
