If you’re still feeling a bit fatigued even though lockdowns have ended, take comfort in the fact that you’re definitely not the only one. Despite life being more ‘normal’ than it has been in a while, we’re still facing the impacts of months and months spent inside.
So if you’re not rushing to get out of the house or to make plans with friends and family, that is completely okay and in some ways, quite expected. In fact, new research from Australian Bananas has found that almost half of Australians (46%) are nervous they won’t have enough energy to connect with others, exercise or even commute following the easing of restrictions.
The good news is, there are things you can do to boost your energy naturally so that when you’re ready to reemerge into the world, you can feel good about it. That’s why The Latch spoke to dietitian Susie Burrell to find out her expert tips and tricks for how you can do just that. Here’s what she had to say:
Eat Regularly for Energy
We all know that it’s important to eat in order to give your body energy. But making sure what you’re eating is healthy and nutritious is going to go a long way in giving your more natural energy to go about your day.
“Creating a daily food plan that is packed full of natural, fresh unprocessed foods and regular meals and snacks is always the first step in supporting energy regulation. Reach for foods with complex carbohydrates with a low glycaemic index, such as bananas,” Burrell said.
“Bananas are a great source of vitamins B and C as well as antioxidants. The B group of vitamins in particular play an important role in energy metabolism and are involved in many enzyme processes in the body. Bananas also contain vitamin C, essential in the making of collagen, and other natural antioxidants that help keep us healthy.”
Don’t Skip Breakfast
Just like eating regularly, making sure that you start your day off right with a filling breakfast is just as important. So if you find yourself frequently skipping breakfast, now is the time to start breaking the habit.
“I always recommend eating a nutritious breakfast to start your day off right,” Burrell said.
“Your body relies on glucose for fuel, so try incorporating some healthy carbohydrates into your breakfast for maximum energy.”
Grab a Banana On the Go
When you’re on the run and going about your day, it can be easy to forget to give your body the natural fuel that it needs and before you know it you’re ravenous, making it more likely that you’ll grab something that’s not great for you in the process.
The best way to combat this is to think in advance and throw a piece of fruit like a banana in your bag. As Burrell said, “Bananas are packed full of honest-to-goodness, natural energy thanks to their balanced blend of natural carbohydrates, vitamin B6 and potassium.”
“This makes them an ideal breakfast food to start your day off right, or for replenishing your energy during that mid-afternoon slump.”
Super Charge It
Bananas are naturally convenient because they’re easy to carry around without making a mess and are ideal on-the-go to enjoy as is. But if you have a little more time to play with, you can super charge your banana to boost its health benefits.
“Try pairing bananas with other foods that are high in protein and healthy fats for a more satiating and delicious snack,” Burrell said.
“I love slicing up my bananas and adding peanut butter or Greek yoghurt and chia seeds — delicious!”
Stay Hydrated
Aside from focusing on food for natural energy, it’s important to make sure you’re also staying hydrated by drinking lots of water each day. Two litres a day is typically what is recommended by health experts, according to Healthline.
“Even mild dehydration can cause tiredness, especially after exercising,” Burrell said. “I’d recommend keeping a glass next to you or a bottle on hand so that you can stay hydrated all day long wherever you are.”
Get Your Sweat On
Have you ever found that you have even more energy after a workout? That’s because endorphins have boosted our physical energy level. So if you’re feeling a lack of energy, having a quick sweat session or going for a walk can help to crank it right up.
“Keeping active and increasing your physical activity will help boost your energy levels,” Burrell said. “Exercise is great for the mind and body and will also help with a better night’s sleep.”
Get Your Eight Hours In
Finally, it’s a no-brainer that getting enough sound, peaceful and uninterrupted sleep is important for maintaining our energy levels during the day. Ensuring that you have enough down time before bed to unwind (we’re talking no TV, computers or smartphones) is one simple way you can make sure you’re getting good quality sleep.
“It may sound obvious, but not getting enough sleep is one of the biggest causes of fatigue,” Burrell said. “Try to limit caffeine, especially in the afternoon and evening, where I’d recommend opting for a more natural boost.”
