The 2024 Critics Choice Awards took place in Los Angeles today, and the new round of winners marks another step in the road to the upcoming Academy Awards in March.
Going into the ceremony, Barbie was leading the nominations in the film categories, with a whopping 18 nods to its name. Oppenheimer followed Barbie with 13 nods, and Killers of the Flower Moon was next in line, with 12. Over in the television categories, The Morning Show led the nominations with six, and Succession followed with five nods to its name.
With a few surprises along the way, the overall tally of the 2024 Critics Choice Award winners is similar to last week’s Golden Globes, in that Oppenheimer and Succession dominated the wins.
Oppenheimer took home eight wins, including Best Picture, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, Best Acting Ensemble, and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. Meanwhile, Succession scored Best Drama Series, as well as acting wins for Kieran Culkin and Australia’s Sarah Snook.
Some of the notable surprises of the evening were Paul Giamatti beating out Cillian Murphy for Best Actor, Emma Stone beating Lily Gladstone for Best Actress, and “I’m Just Ken” from the Barbie soundtrack winning over Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made for?”.
The Critics Choice Association (CCA) is comprised of broadcast, radio and online critics as well as entertainment journalists. When it comes to award season, the Critics Choice Awards are considered one of the major precursor awards in the lead up to the Academy Awards.
The ceremony was be hosted by Chelsea Handler, and you if you missed the show, you can catch up now on Stan.
