Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland was once again the golden child of awards season, sweeping four Critics Choice Awards at the March 7 ceremony, hosted by Taye Diggs.
The film won best picture and best director for director Zhao, along with best adapted screenplay and best cinematography for Joshua James Richards.
The late Chadwick Boseman won yet another posthumous nod for his final performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, with his widow Simone Ledward Boseman once again accepting the award on his behalf, just as she did at the Golden Globes.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom was the second-most-awarded film of the night with three awards, followed by double winners Minari, Trial of the Chicago 7 and Promising Young Woman — including a best actress win for lead Carey Mulligan.
Meanwhile, The Crown continued its successful award show run, winning best drama series, with Gillian Anderson, Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin all winning acting awards for their performances in the Netflix series.
Beloved Apple TV Original Ted Lasso also did well, racking up three awards, including best comedy series. In a nod to his viral appearance at the Golden Globes, best actor in a comedy series winner Jason Sudeikis once again accepted his award clad in a hoodie.
And Euphoria star Zendaya received the SeeHer Award, which is given to a woman who pushes boundaries, defies stereotypes and recognises the importance of authentic portrayals of women across the entertainment landscape. The award was presented to the actress from her Malcolm & Marie co-star John David Washington.
In her acceptance speech, Zendaya said, “I would not be here without the women who paved the way for me,” she said. “Not to overuse the word, but I am incredibly grateful for this award.”
