Canon has dropped its versatile EOS R50 Mirrorless camera by 33% in the Amazon Black Friday sales (from $1,399 down to $944). Here’s why that’s such a ripper deal.
Camera enthusiasts will tell you their most frequently asked question from friends and acquaintances is always: “What’s a good DSLR camera for beginners?” The truth is, a DSLR camera is in many ways a waste of a good camera for a new photographer because they aren’t yet in a place to appreciate its many bells and whistles the way a professional can.
Thankfully, the advent of mirrorless cameras like the Canon EOS R50 bridges the gap between traditional, underpowered digital cameras and full-blown DSLRs. They offer the best of both worlds, an excellent camera to learn on while staying a cut above image quality — and they come with some useful bonus features that go far beyond a simple still image.
A few reasons why this camera rips:
Photography
In raw terms, the Canon EOS R50 Mirrorless is a photographic workhorse. In addition to taking a large 24.2MP image via its APS-C sensor, it also comes with multiple preset shooting modes to help you make the most of any given shot. The addition of built-in software like Creative Assist, Creative Bracket and Advanced A+ helps the user produce crisp and vibrant shots every time.
You can even shoot high-speed subjects with minimal image noise, thanks to its shooting rate of 15 shots per second and built-in quiet electronic filter.
Video
The Canon EOS R50 Mirrorless also features video recording in quality up to 4K at 30-frames-per-second, more than enough for budding videographers. It can also go up to 6K via oversampling if you’re into that sort of thing, but beginners likely won’t need that extra firepower. That high-speed shooting rate comes in handy again for video, allowing photographers to create 120fps videos in 1080p Full HD.
Vlogging
But where the video side of the EOS R50 comes into its own is as a vlogging camera. With its mounted, adjustable rear screen and ability to attach to any handheld grip or stabilising gimbal (also discounted on Amazon for Black Friday), it becomes a fast and effective vlogging camera for crystal clear content creation on the go.
Videos are saved to a standard SD memory card and can be transferred directly to a PC or Mac for editing via USB-C. The attached screen also means you can shoot horizontal or vertical video in-camera, which is a major blessing when you edit the footage later. Much less mucking around in Davinci Resolve.
Live Streaming Capability
The fourth point is one that might be a bit of an outlier on the list of use cases but will be very important for the right person. When plugged into your PC or Mac, the R50 Mirrorless can be used as a webcam for your day-to-day work meetings or for internet livestreaming on platforms like Twitch or TikTok. Point your broadcasting software at the Canon like you would any other webcam, position your webcam window as you like, and get ready to go live. It couldn’t be easier.
The same mount on the camera’s underside that connects it to gimbals or handheld grips also lets it connect to tripods or ring lights. For the up-and-coming Twitch streamer looking to level up their production value beyond their dad’s old Logitech webcam, the R50 becomes a camera that’s hard to pass up at this price.
