David Zaharakis may have retired from the AFL, but now his sights are set on winning Australian Survivor: Heroes Vs Villains. Despite being considered a hero by many, he knows that not everyone will agree with that label.
“The thing about AFL is you can be one team’s hero […] Or you can be another team’s villain and the opposition supporters hate you. I still have other team supporters coming up to me saying how much they hate me, and I love that!” he explained.
His physical prowess and competitive spirit make him an excellent fit for Survivor, a show he’s been watching since he was just 12-years-old. As he explained, “I just love all the elements of it — the physical nature of it, the games. As a kid, you watch the challenges and you think, I want to do that one day.”
However, Zaharakis knows that the game can get tough and that being a hero doesn’t mean he won’t be strategic.
“Just because I am a hero doesn’t mean I am not here to play hard. I think if you watch every superhero comic or movie, the hero always comes out on top. But in the game of Survivor, I don’t think there is a line I am not willing to cross. I think you must cross lines to win. I am definitely prepared for that,” he said.
Zaharakis’ competitive spirit, combined with his experience as a professional athlete, makes him a force to be reckoned with on Survivor. But whether he’ll ultimately be viewed as a hero or a villain by fans of the show remains to be seen.
