The third instalment of Yellowstone has arrived, but before you get stuck in, we’ll catch you up on a few details.
Yellowstone follows “the Dutton family, led by John Dutton, who controls the largest contiguous ranch in the United States. The ranch is under constant attack by those it borders — land developers, an Indian reservation, and the United States of America’s first national park.”
Even though it was originally meant to be a limited series, its popularity has meant that it will stick around for a few more. So here’s what you need to know, before diving into season three.
What is it about?
In the second season, John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and his family “continue to fight for their survival, and unlikely partnerships, new enemies and disloyalty threatens to pull the family apart.”
With — spoiler alert — Tate’s (Brecken Merrill) kidnapping at the end of season two, the third follows the family as they help Tate recover from the distressing experience.
Season three picks up from where season two ended, and John is seen comforting his grandson who is having nightmares following the ordeal.
Who is in the cast?
Costner is back as patriarch James Dutton, alongside Wes Bentley, Kelly Reilly, Luke Grimes, Cole Hauser, and Kelsey Asbille, Forrie R. Smith and Denim Richards.
Joining them this season are Josh Holloway (Colony) as Roarke Carter — “a handsome, charming, shaggy-haired hedge fund manager with ambitious plans in Montana”, Karen Pittman (The Morning Show) as Willa Hays — who partners with Carter, John Emmet Tracy (iZombie) as Ellis Steele, a chief litigator whose firm represents Fortune 500 companies in land-acquisition deals, Jennifer London (Animal Kingdom), who plays a female wrangler on the ranch and Q’orianka Kilcher (The Alienist) as Angela Blue Thunder — Native American and political opponent of Thomas Rainwater.

Let’s talk about Roarke Carter — Season Three’s villain
It looks like Rip (Cole Hauser) and Beth may hit a bumpy patch when Roarke enters the scene.
“Beth is emasculating to most men. That doesn’t scare Roarke,” Holloway told TVInsider. “There’s a spark, even though they are on opposite sides.”
During the interview, Holloway promised some gun-blazing action between him and the Duttons.
“I grew up in Georgia around a bunch of ranchers. I don’t remember there being that many deaths. This is like ranch Mafia!” he said.
With Roarke on opposing sides to the Duttons, it seems like trouble is bubbling under the surface.
One thing’s for sure, we’d never want to cross a Dutton.
