Fans of collector’s items (and the Olympics) will get a kick out of this: Woolworths is teaming up with the Royal Australian Mint to release a range of $2 limited-editions coins, themed around the Australian Olympics and Paralympics teams.
The six $2 coins will be available at Woolworths’ registers from July 14 with each design released weekly. Five coins will represent the colours of the Olympic rings, while a sixth will be in green and gold, honouring the Paralympic Games. In total, there will be 12 million coins dispersed at supermarket registers across the country.
And for those who really want to get into the collecting spirit, limited-edition collectors’ albums for the coins will also be available in-store for $15, containing five $2 coins. A Paralympic album will be available for $3 from August 18.
“We’re proud to be a partner of the Australian Olympic and Paralympic teams,” says Woolworths Chief Marketing Officer Andrew Hicks. “We have a long history of celebrating Australia’s rich sporting history with our customers, and these coins are another great way for them to show their support for our Australian Olympic and Paralympic teams as they go for gold in Tokyo.”
Paralympic Swimmer Ellie Cole OAM, a professional competitor said since 2003, said the coins offer Aussies the chance to own their part of history.
“These collector coins embody the characteristics of what it takes to become a Paralympian or Olympian, competing in the world’s biggest sporting stage,” she said. “It’s exciting to know that Aussies will have the opportunity to own a $2 coin that celebrates the Paralympic team that I am proud to be part of.”
Woolworth and the Royal Australian Mint have previously partnered on coin collections for the Wallabies, Mr Squiggle, Possum Magic, the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and the 2016 Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games.
