Attendees of DC’s FanDome event were not just treated to the first (very dark) trailer for The Batman starring Robert Pattinson, they were also given a welcome update about Wonder Woman 3 from director Patty Jenkins, who confirmed she will be returning to direct.
“We’re super excited about Wonder Woman 3 Gal (Gadot), who is so bummed about not being here, who’s the busiest person in the world, with now three little kids and shooting,” said Jenkins.
“We are all three very excited about some things coming up with Wonder Woman 3,″ she added coyly.
Jenkins was joined by the original Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter, who declared, “Wonder Woman 3 is coming!” before engaging in a chat with the filmmaker about how controversial the character was when first introduced in the late 1970s.
The criticism remained as Jenkins embarked on shooting the first Wonder Woman film, which was released in 2017.
Citing that people’s problem with Diana Prince stemmed from her being “too kind, too beautiful, too loving”, Jenkins said, “She’s the most relevant superhero of our times.”
Relevance aside, the sequel to Wonder Woman, which was released at the end of 2020, suffered some serious setbacks at the box office, thanks to the ongoing issues caused by the pandemic.
With cinemas worldwide in various states of closure — particularly in key markets such as New York and Los Angeles, Wonder Woman 1984 saw a poor theatrical release of just USD $46.5 million domestic and USD $166.5million globally over Christmas — well below expectations.
The movie was made available on HBO Max in the US at the same time — something Jenkins referred to as the “best choice in a bunch of bad choices.” It was a decision several studios were subsequently forced to make as the COVID-19 crisis wore on.
Despite the disappointing box-office haul, a third instalment of the franchise was ordered immediately, making Jenkins one very busy woman as she is currently gearing up to direct Star Wars: Rogue Squadron for Disney, which is slated for a 2023 release.
Gadot and Jenkins have also teamed up on a historical drama about Egyptian Queen Cleopatra for Paramount.
