**Spoiler Alert: this post cotains a spoiler for ‘Wonder Woman 1984’.
Wonder Woman 1984, landed in Australian cinemas on Boxing Day and has already pulled in $85 million worldwide, a promising figure in a year that saw box office revenue destroyed by the coronavirus pandemic and resultant cinema closures.
Never ones to sleep on a good thing, Warner Bros. swiftly announced that Wonder Woman 3 will be fast-tracked, with the third instalment to be written and helmed by reigning director Patty Jenkins.
If you’ve already seen WW84, you may have been left curious about the film’s post credits scene and what they could potentially signal for the next adventure. As the film draws to close we are given a glimpse into the future where we can see that Asteria, the fabled Golden Warrior, is still very much alive despite being believed to have perished.
While it will likely be a few years until we know for certain if the next film will involve Asteria, fans were delighted to see that in Wonder Woman 1984, she was played by none other than the original Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter.
Speaking to Glamour magazine, Jenkins explained her desire to honour Carter’s legacy as the Amazonian warrior saying, “What I loved about this way of doing it is that I feel like we’re really truly honoring who she is. Who is it that inspired the legacy of the greatest hero of all time: Lynda! So it was like a perfect thing to put it both in the story but actually have it stand for exactly what she means to us.”
Inviting actors to make cameos in reimaginings of films in which they originally starred is a reliable trope of modern day filmmaking and a great way to pay homage to the people who helped make loved characters what they are.
Here are some of our other favourites:
Ghostbusters – Bill Murray and more
Basically everyone from the iconic 80’s classic returned for the female-led 2016 version, which incidentally starred Kristen Wiig who plays Cheetah in WW84.
Fans were excited to see Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts among the familiar faces who made special appearances in the paranormal comedy remake.
21 Jump St – Johnny Depp
His career might be in tatters now, but Johnny Depp was once the golden boy of film and television, having scored legions of fans playing undercover cop Tom Hanson in the original 21 Jump St TV series.
In the 2011 version, which starred Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, Depp made a cameo as Hanson along with Peter DeLuise, and Holly Robinson who revisited their roles as Doug Penhall, and Judy Hoffs.
The Brady Bunch Movie – Florence Henderson
When original matriarch Florence Henderson joined the cast of The Brady Bunch Movie in 1995, of course it was all about “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!!” Henderson, who played Carol Brady in the sugary sweet television series that ran from 1969-1974.
This time, she appears as Carol’s mother (the girls’ grandmother) who comes for a visit, lavishes love upon Marcia and puts an end to Jan’s neuroses once and for all.
Star Trek – Leonard Nimoy
Leonard Nimoy once again inhabited his most famous role – Spock Prime – opposite Zachary Quinto who was playing the younger version in the Star Trek film.
The 2009 version explored how Captain Kirk (played by Wonder Woman actor Chris Pine) and Spock struck up their friendship and featured the older Spock talking to his younger self, an experience that Nimoy described as being “very emotional.”
