The case of missing toddler William Tyrell has baffled investigators since he disappeared from his foster grandparent’s home in 2014.
As part of ongoing investigations, police have now conducted a fresh search on the New South Wales mid-north coast, in the vicinity of Heron’s Creek, just minutes from Kendall, where he vanished.
According to the ABC, police are understood to be conducting searches under a coronial order with the help of a dog.
An inquest is also expected to resume in October after it was halted due to the global coronavirus pandemic.
SES volunteers and officers cut through thick grass around Walkers Creek, with investigators focusing on an area near an old sawmill, which is located near where convicted paedophile Frank Abbott lived in a caravan at the time.
The ABC also reported that Abbott would “often ramble” to neighbours, saying he could smell the scent of a “dead human” near the creek.
In an interview with the outlet, shop owner Jan Anderson recalled a conversation she had with the suspect.
“He used to go on and on about a peculiar smell … We said it’s probably a dead animal, a kangaroo.”
“He said, ‘no, it’s not that.’ We said, ‘why don’t you go and tell the police?’
He said, ‘I’m not going to do that … because if there’s something up there, I’ll get blamed for it.”
Abbott is currently serving prison time in Goulburn Jail and has been a person of interest in the case since Tyrrell disappeared.
The inquest will resume at Lidcombe Coroner’s Court later this year.
