Spring has sprung in Brisbane, and with it comes pockets of vibrant colours and fragrant blooms. As the weather warms and the days grow longer, the city’s parks, gardens and green spaces come alive with a spectacular display of spring flowers.
Fortunately, you don’t have to go far from Brisbane CBD to see them. While the city’s gardens flourish with roses and tulips, if you’re up for a road trip, sunflower fields await. Here’s everywhere you can chase spring flowers in and around Brisbane.
Where to See Spring Flowers In Brisbane
Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Mount Coot-tha
One of the city’s crown jewels, the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mount Coot-tha, is a paradise for plant lovers. In spring, the gardens burst with a riot of colours, from delicate cherry blossoms to vibrant azaleas and camellias. Stroll through the Japanese Gardens or explore the themed sections to discover an array of spring flowers from around the world.
Roma Street Parkland
Just a stone’s throw from the city centre, Roma Street Parkland is a sprawling jungle showcasing the best of Brisbane’s horticultural expertise. Spring, in particular, brings a stunning display of annuals and perennials, including colourful tulips, daisies, and aromatic roses. Don’t miss the Spectacle Garden, which is specially designed for seasonal floral displays.
New Farm Park
Overlooking the Brisbane River, New Farm Park is a popular spot for picnics, outdoor gatherings, and, of course, spring flower sightings. The Jacaranda trees that line the park’s avenues burst into a sea of purple blossoms during spring, creating a canopy that’s worthy of a romantic movie moment.
Where to See Jacarandas In Brisbane
Jacaranda Park, Yeronga
It’s in the name. This park is dotted with purple Jacarandas and people picnicking under them.
Kangaroo Point’s Dockside Walk
Hug the river alongside Dockside Walk for a row of Jacaranda trees lining the path. The skyline in the backdrop makes it that much more special.
George St, Goodna
This leafy suburb is known to have some of the best suburban Jacaranda displays. Walk the streets, admire the homes, and take uninterrupted photos of the purple canopy.
Where to See Sunflowers In Brisbane
Sunflowers typically bloom between January and March in the warmer weather. However, they are highly dependent on the weather—some fields across the Scenic Rim and Southern Queensland Country spring to life in November or December.
Scenic Rim
The Scenic Rim region, which encompasses towns like Boonah and Beaudesert, is known for its agricultural beauty. During the sunflower season, keep an eye out for fields along the scenic country roads. These fields often make for an unexpected and delightful discovery.
Toowoomba and Warwick
The official Sunflower route connects Toowoomba and Warwick, which is a two-hour drive from Brisbane. The road is lined with sunflowers, enticing road trippers to pull over for a photo. For your best chance at catching these beauties in full bloom, contact the Toowoomba Visitor Centre for updates on when the flowers are in bloom.
Kalbar Sunflower Festival, April
Ditch the hunt for flower fields and embrace the Kalbar Sunflower Festival from April 19 to 21, 2024. It’s a vibrant celebration of community spirit and colour, offering a chance to wander through half a million sunflowers and explore a four-acre sunflower maze. The festival includes kids’ activities, yoga, art workshops, cooking classes, a scenic sunset dinner, and even chopper rides for aerial views.
