In 1996, audiences sat at the edge of their seats as Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt teamed up to chase tornadoes.
The film quickly became a cult classic, bringing in $494 million at the global box office.
Universal Pictures is now looking to reboot the film and is looking at Joseph Kosinski to direct.
According to Variety, Kosinski, who has just finished directing Top Gun: Maverick, is said to be in negotiations with the studio.
The outlet also reported that Universal is searching for the right writers to pen the script, however, have said that Frank Marshall — who produced the Jason Bourne films, Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park.
Currently, there are no stars attached to the project nor is there a set plot.
The original film centred around a couple, Dr Jo Harding (Hunt) and Bill Harding (Paxton), a couple on the brink of divorce who team up to chase tornadoes in order to deliver their advance weather alert system that has to be placed in the path of the Twister.
It’s unclear whether any of the original cast will return, however, two of the film’s major stars, Paxton and Philip Seymour Hoffman, both passed away since the original film was made.
In 2017, Paxton suffered a stroke, a complication of heart surgery, while Hoffman passed away from a drug overdose in 2014.
Twister garnered respect from the industry for its ground-breaking special effects and was directed by Speed‘s Jan De boot, written by author Michael Crichton and with Steven Spielberg serving as executive producer.
