‘The Traitors’: Hostage Negotiator Nigel Is a Traitor With an Edge

2022 is the year of Network Ten premiering new shows and new formats, and so far, we’re loving it. We’ve roamed the streets of Victoria with Hunted Australia, cruised along the Mediterranean with The Real Love Boat, and now, we’re ready to play detective with The Traitors.

Hosted by Rodger CorserThe Traitors is a new competition reality series that takes place in an old hotel, where our Faithful contestants will compete in challenges to win bars of silver.

The twist, because there’s always a twist, is that there are Traitors masquerading as Faithfuls amongst them, trying to pick them off, one by one. If a Traitor makes it to the end, they’ll win the entire prize pool of silver — worth up to $250,000 — for themselves. If a Faithful makes it to the end, they’ll be presented with a choice: either split the prize with their other Faithful, or keep it all for themselves.

One of the Traitors hoping to eliminate all the Faithfuls before they get him is Nigel, a 50-year-old hostage negotiator from Tasmania.

If there’s one thing to know about Nigel, it’s that he’s not planning on telling his fellow competitors much about his life in the outside world.

You see, Nigel, who works as an extortion response consultant, was once a photojournalist working from different war zones, until he was held hostage in Somalia for 460 days alongside another journalist.

It wasn’t until his family paid USD $675,000 that he was released.

The experience, Nigel said, taught him how to survive anything, and he knows that if his fellow contestants were to find out about his past, they’d immediately understand him to be a major threat to their respective games.

“I will not be telling anyone about my history, that would be like suicide,” Nigel said in a press statement. “If people worked out I was a hostage negotiator, they would probably find that quite intimidating and not a skill set people would want in the game.”

Prior to heading into the game, Nigel thought that it would be fun to play the game as a Traitor, saying: “I think you have the ability to control the game a little bit more and as The Traitors come together, you create a bit of a pact and work together on who to target”.

Describing himself as highly competitive and stubborn as a bull, Nigel is not someone to be underestimated in this game. But will he be able to slink through undetected, or will the Faithfuls banish him before he can make it to the end? Only time will tell. Until then…

The Traitors airs at 7.30pm, Sunday — Tuesdays, only on 10 and 10 Play on Demand. Miss an episode? Catch up on 10 Play.
