Due to COVID, last year’s art fair was cut short, so this year, internationally renowned, The Other Art Fair is returning to Sydney, and it has big plans. From Thursday, 18 March to Sunday, 21 March, the autumn edition will be held at Barangaroo Reserve’s, The Cutaway. The semi-open-air space is the perfect backdrop for such an event. Here’s what to expect.

Which artists are exhibiting?

The Other Art Fair Sydney 2021 autumn edition will present the works of 110 emerging artists as selected by an accomplished selection committee. The Selection Committee for this edition includes curator and creative producer Sebastian Goldspink, festival director of Art Month Sydney Emma O’Neill, editor of Art Edit magazine Rose of Sharon Leake and Saatchi Art’s Chief Curator and VP, Art Advisory Rebecca Wilson.

Is there food and drink?

Food from some of Sydney’s favourite venues will be on offer throughout the fair, including melt-in-your-mouth pastries from Brickfields Bakery and hand-crafted pies from Broomfields Pies. Grab a drink from Riot Wine Co, famous for their easy-drinking, sustainably-made Australian wine in a can and learn more about wine at one of their workshops.

What are the highlights of the fair?

From Williamsburg to Sydney, Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School will be in attendance with performances and live drop-in drawing sessions. The interactive digital art of the year is from Marc-O-Matic, one of the world’s best digital artists, who transforms static imagery into elaborate experiential art worlds that can be explored in virtual and augmented reality. Michael Pederson, aka Miguel Marquez, creates art outside the confines of the gallery. In the past, Miguel’s humorous works have included ‘personal space’ preference cards and oversized emergency panic buttons hidden in local parks. Keep your eyes peeled at the fair for his latest work.

If you thought it was only about art on the walls, you would be amiss. Hand-poked tattoo artist Ink Sphinx will take up residence at the fair, with tattoos starting from $100 and on a first-come, first-served basis. You can also watch Shannon Crees create a digital animated artwork live.

Is The Other Art Fair online?

From Tuesday, 23 March to Sunday, 28 March, visitors can navigate their way through The Other Art Fair Sydney: Virtual Edition. All artists from the in-person fair will be featured in the Virtual Edition, with visitors able to chat in real-time with artists and purchase art through Saatchi Art. There will be a series of free digital events throughout the week, including art
