who is darren hayes

Looks like there’s a strong contender for The Masked Singer’s scariest costume in this year’s batch of contestants. Lucky for viewers, The Grim Reaper’s terrifying mask is equalised by the celebrity inside’s heavenly singing voice.

After their season premiere performance, fans are curious to find out who’s hiding beneath the gold embossed coattails and velvet top hat.

Here’s our guess for which celebrity could be underneath The Grim Reaper’s skull mask.

The Masked Singer 2023 Grim Reaper

In a snippet from the season premiere posted to Instagram, The Masked Singer’s Grim Reaper sings an angelic version of “when the party’s over” by Billie Eilish.

Chrissie Swan showered The Grim Reaper in compliments and praise.

Another judge, Abbie Chatfield, was moved to tears and recounts her time hearing a similar performance.

“I’ve never heard anything like that in my life. There’s only really one other time in my life that a voice like that has made me cry instantly,” she says, “And it was for personal reasons and it was the first Mardi Gras that I was able to go to. It was the first time that I was able to express my queerness in full.”

The showers of admiration from the show’s panellists prompted us to look for hints about who this mysterious character might be.

There’s one general guess from viewers — Darren Hayes.

Darren Hayes is one half of ’90s pop duo, Savage Garden. After parting ways in 2001, he’s remained an integral part of the Australian music scene and beyond as celebrated vocalist, lyricist, music producer, composer, and entertainer. Currently, he’s in the process of writing his memoir, which is set for release in late 2024.

Is he the divine voice behind The Masked Singer’s Grim Reaper?
