If you haven’t taken a trip down to Thomastown to visit the That’s Amore Cheesery, then you’re missing out—especially if you’re a cheese-lover.
That’s Amore Cheesery isn’t just a destination, it’s an experience. Part-cafe, part-deli and most importantly; cheese laboratory, you can get good food, great coffee and freshly-made cheese, to have in or takeaway.
It all started back in 2004, when owner Giorgio Linguanti arrived on the shores of Port Phillip Bay, without a word of English or any cheese-making experience. It was in Melbourne, where he first got a job at a cheese factory and discovered his passion for cheese.
Only four years later, in 2008, Giorgio started his own business, That’s Amore Cheese, with just one product: the Bocconcini Leaf; an instant hit at big Italian restaurants around Melbourne. Soon after he began making Burrata and Smoked Scamorza, and the rest is history.
Through creativity, passion and experimentation, Giorgio’s repertoire extends to more than 40 types of cheese, that he and his team of 100 talented cheesemakers produce daily.
Made on site, you can shop and taste all your Italian favourites, from Fior di Latte and fresh Ricotta to Buffalo Mozzarella, and Caciocavallo, made using traditional Italian recipes and methods that are naturally free from preservatives and artificial colours. They use local farm-fresh milk that is non-homogenised, pasteurised, and sourced locally in Victoria, giving us the true Italian-Australian experience: Australian produce, Italian methods.
Seriously, what a dream. A one-stop shop where you can shop traditionally made Italian cheeses to take home for your next dinner party, or just to snack on with olive oil and salt, or you can pull up a pew and devour ricotta straight out of production, either savoury or sweet.
On top of being one of the most traditional and extensive Italian-style cheeseries in Melbourne, they’re also pretty famous for their succulent Abruzzese-style Porchetta; tender and juicy roast pork stuffed with aromatic herbs covered in perfectly crunchy crackling. There is genuinely no better hangover snack; the perfect mix of salty, crispy and carby.
So, if you’re after a cheese-y outing, a sensory day trip, or just a coffee, a porchetta roll and some fresh burratta, you’ll find what you’re looking for at That’s Amore Cheesery.
