The first full trailer for the long-awaited film The Batman starring Robert Pattinson and Zoë Kravitz has been revealed, and it seems the adventures of the masked superhero have taken an even darker turn than in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.
Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman seems to give us the most tortured and nihilistic version of Bruce Wayne (Pattinson) yet — as evidenced by him telling his butler Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis): “I don’t care what happens to me.”
Elsewhere in the trailer, Pattinson’s Batman says, rather bleakly, “Fear is a tool. When the light hits the sky, it’s not just a call. It’s a warning.”
While the trailer opens with the arrest of The Riddler (Paul Dano) — the psychotic serial killer who leaves cryptic clues with his victims, the rest of the promo largely focuses on Kravitz’s Catwoman.
Kravitz is the latest actress to inhabit the character, following in the footsteps of Michelle Pfeiffer in 1992’s Batman Returns and Anne Hathaway in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises.
We also get more of an introduction to Colin Farrell’s version of The Penguin — a villain played to perfection by Danny DeVito in Batman Returns. Farrell is completely unrecognisable as Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot.
The trailer was dropped at DC FanDome — which took place virtually on October 16. As part of the presentation, fans were also treated to a behind-the-scenes reel which provided some insight into the making of the film.
Included in that reel was Pattinson telling a story about one of his early screen tests for the movie, during which he wore Val Kilmer’s rubber Batsuit from 1995’s Batman Forever.
“It was crazy but I remember putting it on and thinking, ‘This is going to be absolutely impossible'”, the actor said. “I remember doing like two takes and (director Matt Reeves) being like, ‘What can we do about that sweat?’ Nothing!”
Pattison also revealed that the lines between Batman and Bruce Wayne are more blurred than ever in the upcoming flick, saying “He’s a little bit out of control. He gets lost in it every time he puts (the suit) on at night. He’s becoming this sort of odd creature.”
The film also stars Jeffrey Wright as the GCPD’s James Gordon; John Turturro as Carmine Falcone; Peter Sarsgaard as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson and Jayme Lawson as mayoral candidate Bella Reál.
The Batman lands in cinemas on March 4, 2022. Check out the trailer below.
