The unofficial uniform of 2020 was hands down a comfortable and stylish matching tracksuit, whether tonal or tie-dye.
With stay-at-home orders in place and working from home the norm for much of the year, there truly wasn’t much point in wearing anything else. Matching tracksuits were easily the most comfortable option helped us look and feel somewhat put together in an undoubtedly dishevelled time.
As we head into summer, we’ve got to admit we’re unwilling to compromise on comfort now. We know what it’s like to feel cosy and cocooned all day long and we don’t want to go back to itchy seams, tight waists and restrictive silhouettes — although we still want to appear stylish, refined, and up to date with the trends.
That’s where Terry Towelling comes in. An absorbent, soft and lightweight fabric, the textile dates back to 1850 but comes back around often, as most trends do. It last had a major resurgence in the pool party aesthetic of the ’70s, and in 2020, appears to be having its moment in the spotlight once more.
A most popular application of Terry Towelling trend comes by the way of matching co-ords — a button-up short-sleeve shirt with high-waisted shorts. Easily worn over a swimsuit at the beach, with sneakers and statement jewellery, or heels and a statement lip, it’s a versatile look that makes no compromises on comfort, and is therefor what you can expect us to be wearing all summer long.
Here, we bring you five labels that are getting creative with Terry Towelling.
Terry
Sydney friends Brigette Clarke and Lucy Halfpenny founded Terry after a shared love of terry towelling accessories, in particular, a bucket hat. The label’s range of lightweight separates and coveralls is inspired by European summers and ’70’s poolside apparel.
Summi Summi
Australian label Summi Summi creates classic closet staples wearers want to keep in their wardrobe forever. Dresses, pants, cotton tops, the label has it all, but it’s Summi Summi’s range of Terry Towelling separates that has wearing love heart eyes.
We create well made classic pieces for every woman to have in their wardrobe forever. We run small numbers and do not order to excess. Our factory based in China is family run with only a small amount of employees who lovingly hand make each item. We use no plastic in our packaging and make certain that all packaging is 100% biodegradable.
Zulu & Zephyr
Australian swimwear and apparel label Zulu & Zephyr has a collection dedicated to Terry Towelling fabric — from bikinis and one-pieces to bucket hats and tote bags. The quick-drying fabric is ideal for beach days.
Buci
Sustainable NYC label Buci consciously makes all pieces in New York City. The range of simple basics that includes wrap skirts, tanks, shorts and dresses embrace the texture of Terry Towelling and would look incredible partnered with high-end textiles like cotton and silk.
Triangl
Another Australian bikini label making the most of Terry Towelling for its range of swimwear, Triangl creates on-trend swim, clothing and accessories that are designed with long summer days in mind.
