Director James Gunn was trying to keep a huge secret until the secret accidentally revealed itself by way of an Instagram post.
Iconic action star, Sylvester Stallone, took to Instagram to reveal his involvement in the new Suicide Squad film, but quickly took the post down. Of course, being the internet, fans caught sight of it before forcing Gunn to confirm if it was true or not.
Taking to his own account, Gunn made the announcement next to a selfie of him and the Rocky star, saying: “Always love working with my friend @officialslystallone & our work today on #TheSuicideSquad was no exception. Despite Sly being an iconic movie star, most people still don’t have any idea what an amazing actor this guy is.”
When a fan asked if Stallone was appearing in the next movie, Gunn responded with a “Yep”. Case closed. Although, no other details of who Stallone is playing have been shared as of yet.
Stallone previously worked with the director on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, where he played Stakar Ogord so it’s pretty exciting to see them back together again.
The Suicide Squad — which is a “sort-of” sequel to Suicide Squad (2016) is set to be released on August 6, 2021, and stars Margot Robbie (Birds of Prey), Idris Elba (Concrete Cowboy), John Cena (Bumblebee), Joel Kinnaman (The Killing), Peter Capaldi (Doctor Who) and Viola Davis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom).
The story follows a gang of misanthropic oddballs on a quest they weren’t all supposed to survive, and was a huge box office success, raking in nearly $750 million at the worldwide box office.
For the upcoming movie, Gunn wrote the screenplay, taking inspiration from the ’80s comics, telling Empire that it “wasn’t necessarily a continuation of [David] Ayer’s film, but not exactly a reboot either.”
“Um, it’s its own thing,” he told the outlet back in October. “It does not contradict the first movie, I don’t think. It might in some small ways… I don’t know…”
According to the director, Ayer’s version “didn’t come out how David wanted it to come out.”
“But he did one really, really great thing, and that is he picked fantastic actors to work with, and he dealt with these actors in building their characters in a really deep and fearless way. It’s something David definitely deserves to be lauded for, and it’s definitely added to this movie.”
