Drop Everything: A Scott Pilgrim Anime Is in the Works

The year is 2010, and I’m sitting alone in the only cinema in Wagga Wagga. It’s 09.30am on a Saturday. There are only three other people here and I have a choc top in my hand, probably a mint one. As I finish my choc top, an advert stops playing and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World consumes the screen.

Now, for the proceeding hour-and-fifty-two-minutes, my brain is blown again, and again, and again.

What’s more, 13 years later, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is still pure dead brilliant. There’s no other movie quite like it. The plot of Pilgrim having to kung-fu battle seven villains in order to date his crush, Ramona Flowers, is B-grade fun. Under Edgar Wright’s directorial mastery, comic book onomatopoeia “BOOMS” and “POWS” fly across each scene. And Michael Cera kills it as Pilgrim, bringing some sleazy charm to this deadbeat character.

But why am I telling you all this? Well, because a Scott Pilgrim anime is now happening. This is the most excited I’ve been in my adult life.

As Wright said in a statement, “This is not a drill! This is happening!”

“After much musing over the years about there being potential for an anime adaptation of Scott Pilgrim, I’m thrilled to say one is imminent, with the cast back together.”

No, that’s right, “with the cast back together.” Not only is Cera playing Pilgrim again, Mary Winstead is back as Flowers. Tthe other returning cast members include the likes of Chris Evans, Aubrey Plaza, and Brie Larson.

However, it’s worth noting that Wright isn’t returning to direct this anime but has instead been named as a producer for said project.

So, who’s directing the Scott Pilgrim anime? Abel Gongora, who has worked on the likes of Adventure Time, Devilman Crybaby, and Ping Pong: The Animation. All of these series slay, so we’re all in a beaut pair of hands.

The Scott Pilgrim anime is being distributed by Netflix. As of March 31, a release date hasn’t been made public.

Get hyped, folks. Get hyped.
