Say hello to a brand new remake of Scarface.
Universal Pictures has announced a reboot of the classic gangster movies which will be a reimagining of both the 1932 and 1983 films of the same name.
Written by the Coen Brothers, Joel and Ethan (True Grit), the reboot will tell the core story about an Italian immigrant and will be set in Los Angeles.
In production since 2011, Scarface will be directed by Oscar nominee and Call Me By Your Name filmmaker, Luca Guadagnino — which is now in pre-production for a sequel — and will be produced by Dylan Clark Productions (Bird Box).
The 1932 film was produced by acclaimed producer Howard Hughes and was loosely based on the 1929 novel by Armitage Trail which, a story inspired by Al Capone.
Starring Paul Muni as Antonio “Tony” Camonte, it told the story of a gangster who rose in power through the Chicago gangland.
Due to its violent nature, censors banned the film in several states across the United States, forcing Hughes to remove it from circulation and store in a vault.
The most recent (and arguably most famous) adaptation of the film starred Al Pacino as Tony Montana, one of the most famous movie characters of all time.
Montana was loosely based on the original novel and 1932 adaptation and also inspired by Capone.
Scarface (1983) also starred a young Michelle Pfeiffer as Elvira, the girlfriend of the he’sd of a Miami drug cartel, Frank Lopez (Robert Loggia).
In 2006, a video game titled Scarface: The World is Yours was released as a “quasi-sequel” to the film and featured an alternate ending. Montana also features in the 2006 video game Scarface: Money. Power. Respect.
No release date or cast information has been announced for the new adaptation and all production is currently at a standstill due to the coronavirus pandemic.
