Will AFL Hall-of-Famer Jason Akermanis Be Remembered as an ‘SAS’ Great?

Jason Akermanis has joined in on the good ol’ SAS Australia 2023 fun. Side by side with the likes of ‘Cocaine Cassie’, Craig McLachlan and 11 other Aussie personalities, he’s been selected to partake in a series mental and physical strength that simulate one of the world’s toughest special ops processes.

Here’s everything you need to know about the award winning sports star before the October premiere of SAS Australia.

SAS Australia 2023: Who Is Jason Akermanis?

When we think about the legends of early 2000s AFL, Jason Akermanis is one that comes to mind. His professional career spanned over 15 years, during which time he was the recipient of the Brownlow Medal and a triple premiership winner. His career ended in 2010, during his stint with the Western Bulldogs.

Jason’s time in the AFL didn’t go without controversy. On two separate occasions in 2007 and 2010, the now-SAS Australia recruit shared his divisive thoughts on performance-enhancing drugs and coming out in sport. According to Andrew Reid, journalist at Yahoo Sports, the 2010 column by Akermanis suggested that the first open expression of homosexuality in the AFL is not “worth” the “heavy burden”. These comments ultimately contributed to the end of Jason’s career.

What Does Jason Akermanis Do Now?

In the wake of Jason Akermanis’ controversial columns, he has since taken up a career in real estate. The now-46-year-old moved into the property sales industry in 2020 and has been hooked ever since.

Will he secure the win on SAS Australia 2023 or is he in it for redemption? We’ll have to stay tuned to find out…

SAS Australia 2023 premieres in October 2023 on Channel 7 and 7Plus. You can prepare for the upcoming season by watching old episodes on 7Plus.
