With the Golden Globes done and dusted for the year, award season is barrelling forward toward the Academy Awards in March.
Today, the 2023 nominees for the Screen Actors Guild Awards have been announced, and leading the way this year are The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once, which picked up five nominations apiece, with both being nominated for the SAG’s ensemble cast award.
Also nominated for the ensemble cast award — The SAG’s equivalent to Best Picture — are Babylon, The Fabelmans, and Women Talking.
In the solo acting categories, Australia’s Cate Blanchett joined Michelle Yeoh, Viola Davis, Ana de Armas, and Danielle Deadwyler in the lead actress race, marking a notable snub for Michelle Williams’ work in The Fabelmans.
Meanwhile, Austin Butler, Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser, Bill Nighy, and Adam Sandler will duke it out for the lead actor award.
Over on the television side of things, the stacked drama series field included nods for Better Call Saul, The Crown, Ozark, Severance, and The White Lotus. In comedy, Abbott Elementary, Barry, Hacks, The Bear and Only Murders in the Building are in the running.
Notably, last year’s big winners — Succession and Ted Lasso — were ineligible this year.
The SAG Awards are voted for by — you guessed it — members of the Screen Actors Guild. Each year, the Guild randomly selects two committees of 2,100 each, representing the film and television branches of the group. Each committee is responsible for selecting the nominations, and once the nominees are announced, the full SAG membership can vote for the winners. The Screen Actors Guild has roughly 160,000 members.
The SAG Awards are considered a major precursor award for future Oscar winners, and was especially successful last year in picking the eventual Academy Award nominees — CODA was awarded in the SAG Awards’ Best Ensemble Cast category, and went on to win Best Picture. In the major acting categories, Jessica Chastain, Will Smith, Ariana DeBose, and Troy Kotsur all picked up SAG Awards and went on to win Academy Awards, also.
When Are the SAG Awards 2023?
The 2023 SAG Awards will be held on Sunday, February 26, at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles, which means Monday, February 27 in Australia.
How to Watch the SAG Awards in Australia
After years of airing on US networks TNT and TBS, the Screen Actors Guild announced its new partnership with Netflix on Thursday.
From 2024, the SAG Awards will stream on Netflix, but for this year’s ceremony, the 2023 SAG Awards will be streamed live on Netflix’s YouTube channel.
