Grab me a fan because it’s getting hot in here. Our 90s crush, Freddie Prinze Jr, is set to star in the reboot of Punky Brewster.
In this continuation of the iconic ‘80s sitcom about a bright young girl raised by a foster dad (originally played by the late George Gaynes), Punky is now a single mother of three trying to get her life back on track when she meets Izzy, a young girl in the foster system who reminds Punky a lot of her younger self.
Reprising her role as the feisty teen who is now all grown up is Soleil Moon Frye who will star alongside Cherie Johnson as her best friend.
Prinze Jr. will play Travis, Punky’s ex-husband (although, we’re hoping for some re-kindled romance), Quinn Copeland as Izzy, Noah Cottrell as Diego, Oliver De Los Santos as Daniel and Lauren Lindsey Donzis as Hannah.
The series, which you can stream from 26 February on Stan, is sure to resonate with old audiences and just like Saved by the Bell, will speak to new ones as well.
But let’s get back to Freddie.
Seemingly ageless, Prinze Jr, 44, was a staple rom-com heartthrob for ’90s kids everywhere.
Married to Buffy the Vampire Slayer star, Sarah Michelle Gellar, for 18 years (that’s a lifetime in Hollywood) the pair have two children, Charlotte Grace, 11 and Rocky James, eight.
The actor has appeared in Friends (as Rachel’s Manny), the Scooby-Doo franchise, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Boston Legal, 24, Robot Chicken and voiced a character in the Star Wars TV series.
Of course, his most infamous role was as Zack Siler in the 1999 flick, She’s All That, opposite Rachael Leigh Cook as Laney “I’m a bet? I’m a f–king bet?” Boggs. A role which we still hold dear to our hearts and will share with our children and our children’s children.
One thing’s for sure, if he’s in the Punky Brewster reboot, then you bet we’ll be watching.
Punky Brewster premieres February 26, only on Stan.
