Every end has a beginning.
If you’re a fan of Power, do we have good news for you.
Today, Stan dropped the trailer for the newest instalment of the ever-growing Power Universe franchise, and if you like gritty, early ’90s coming-of-age dramas, this one is absolutely for you.
Power Book III: Raising Kanan is the Kanan Stark origin story, basically, as the universe grows to include the character’s backstories.
Set in South Jamaica, Queens in 1991, we meet Kanan — played by Mekai Curtis — as a 15-year-old, long before his prison stint, long before he became Ghost and Tommy’s mentor-turned-rival. In this series, he’s the son of Raquel “Raq” Thomas — played by Patina Miller — a cocaine dealer on the rise and this is a family with issues.
In the trailer, we see Kanan asking his mother to “get [him] started in the business”.
“Let me help you,” he says.
“The streets don’t play, Kanan,” she replies. “That’s what I keep trying to tell you, but you don’t wanna hear me though.”
Power Book III dives deep into the complex dynamic between the two and looks at themes of identity and legacy, and the role and impact violence plays amongst them. We get a taste of this in the trailer as it shows drive-by shootings, car crashes and what looks like Raq teaching Kanan how to shoot a gun.
It’s a series about love and betrayal, and in a world where everyone is hiding something, it’s only a matter of time before everything bubbles to the surface, and when it does, there are consequences for all.
The third book in the Power Universe co-stars Omar Epps, London Brown, Malcolm Mays, Hailey Kilgore, Joey Bada$$, Toby Sandeman, Shanley Caswell, Lovie Simone and Quincy Brown.
