It was the game absolutely none of us were waiting for.
Season seven of the iconic TV show The Simpsons is prime golden-era territory and absolutely packed with hilarious and highly quotable scenes. Lee Carvallo’s Putting Challenge is a particularly memorable highlight and yesterday former Simpsons writer and executive producer Bill Oakley shared on Twitter a real-life version of the awful game that Bart receives as a gift.
It’s a free browser game built by student and gamer Aaron Demeter that recreates all the magic of receiving the “crappy” game for Christmas.
The game was built using audio from season seven episode 11, ‘Marge Be Not Proud’. This is the episode where the videogame Bonestorm — a parody of Mortal Kombat — becomes the latest seasonal hype and Bart decides to try and steal the game as he can’t get a copy.
Marge is furious but at the end of the episode, she decides to buy Bart “the game all the kids want”, which turns out to be Lee Carvallo’s Putting Challenge.
The game was played over the end credits and encourages kids to play with care and caution. Bart obviously hits the ball directly in the “parking lot” and then declines to play further.
It was based on the real-life golfing game, Lee Trevino’s Fighting Golf and designed as a send-up of how boring golfing games are.
The browser version of the parody game doesn’t offer much in the way of gameplay. You can either hit the ball into the hole using a putter and a feather touch or you can send it in to the car park using a three wood and a power drive.
Still, it’s a fun way to kill a few minutes if you’re trapped in lockdown and the nostalgia factor is extremely good.
