Why Legendary Costume Designer Patricia Field Is Not Returning for the ‘SATC’ Reboot

It has been argued that New York City is the fifth character in Sex and the City. If that is true (it is) then the fashion surely made up the sixth member of the group we all wished we were a part of.

The clothes Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda wore spoke volumes of their personalities and not only became something we anticipated seeing each episode but have emulated over the years.

From Carrie’s Dior newspaper print dress to Charlotte’s Vera Wang and, later, Badgley Mischka wedding gowns, costume designer Patricia Field kept us sartorially spellbound for six seasons and two movies.

With the Sex and the City reboot now officially underway, the question on all our minds was “what will they be wearing?!”.

Of course, they will be looking fabulous when the new series, titled And Just Like That… hits our screens, but will they have that signature Pat Field je ne sais quoi? No. No, they will not.

Field was, unfortunately, unable to make her schedule work in order to allow her to style both the reboot and Darren Star’s other fashion juggernaut Emily in Paris — on which she is also the costume designer.

In an interview with WWD, Field said, “The main reason was a time conflict.”

“I wasn’t able to be in New York doing that and be in Paris doing Emily in Paris. But I told them to call my very dear friend Molly Rogers, who also worked in my store back in the day. She did Sex and the City with me from start to finish. She knew it well so she’s doing it. My dance card was full.”

Emily in Paris, which debuted on Netflix in 2020 to rather divisive reviews, is currently shooting its second season in the French capital.

In honour of the legendary Field, who is also the costume designer on Younger, and her service to TV couture, I asked The Latch team to reveal their favourite Sex and the City lewks that were courtesy of the incomparable costume queen. Here’s what they said.

Big’s Shirt

So simple, chic and sexy. This look, born out of necessity but oozing with style was a favourite with several people on our team.

Samatha’s Pink Suit

No one did colour blocking quite like Sam Jones, and this pink suit proves our point.

Carrie’s Green Satin Skirt

This Vivienne Westwood number was another standout for our team.

Miranda’s Wedding Dress

Miranda tends to be left out a lot when it comes to memorable fashion moments, but we could not overlook her gorgeous velvet wedding ensemble.

Charlotte’s Elizabeth Taylor Moment

This Eric Way dress became the stuff of legend after Charlotte made it so.

Sam Does Gingham

And she does it well.

And of course…

I mean, naturally, this made the list. It does not get any more iconic than this.
