Is the age of Barbenheimer over? The Oscar nominations for 2024 have been announced, and although Barbie is still very much in the race, it seems that Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things are pulling ahead.
Oppenheimer is leading the nominations this year, pulling in a 13 nods across the categories, including nods for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. and Best Supporting Actress for Emily Blunt. Meanwhile, Poor Things picked up 11 nods, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress for Emma Stone, and Best Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo.
Meanwhile, Barbie has snagged eight nominations, including Best Picture, as well as Supporting Actor nominations for Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera. Eight nominations is certainly nothing to sneeze at, but there are some notable snubs for the blockbuster film, as well. Greta Gerwig was shut out of the Best Director category, and Margot Robbie didn’t manage to secure a nod for Best Actress. On the other hand, the film picked up two nods in the Original Song category, for “I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made for?”
How to Watch the Oscars in Australia
The 96th Annual Academy Awards will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. For Aussies wanting to tune in, the ceremony will air live in Australia on Monday, March 11 on Channel 7 and 7Plus. This year, the show will start an hour earlier, which will be 10am AEDT for Aussies.
