SAG Award Nominations 2024: Barbenheimer Continues to Dominate

SAG Award nominations 2024: Barbenheimer continues to dominate

With the 2023 Screen Actors Guild strike done and dusted, the union is ready to move on. It’s onwards and upwards, and that means one thing: It’s time for the 2024 SAG Award nominations.

To nobody’s surprise, Barbie and Oppenheimer are leading the film nominations with four nods each, and both were nominated for Outstanding Performance By a Cast in a Motion Picture — the SAG Awards’ equivalent to a Best Picture award. Killers of the Flower MoonAmerican Fiction, and The Color Purple also performed well, although there have been some notable snubs this year. May December was completely shut out, Leonardo DiCaprio missed out on a nomination for his role in Killers of the Flower Moon, and Poor Things failed to snag a nod for Outstanding Performance By a Cast in a Motion Picture or for Mark Ruffalo’s performance.

In the television categories, it’s again no surprise that Succession is leading the way. The final series of the HBO drama picked up five nominations, including one for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. However, there was a notable snub here, also. While Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Matthew MacFadyen and Sarah Snook were all nominated for their roles, Jeremy Strong — Succession‘s eldest boy — was blanked.

Outside of SuccessionThe Morning Show and The Last of Us both performed well in the drama categories. In comedy, Ted Lasso and The Bear picked up four nods each, and both snagged a nod for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

The SAG Awards are voted for by — you guessed it — members of the Screen Actors Guild. Each year, the Guild randomly selects two committees of 2,100 each, representing the film and television branches of the group. Each committee is responsible for selecting the nominations, and once the nominees are announced, the full SAG membership can vote for the winners. The Screen Actors Guild has roughly 160,000 members.

The SAG Awards are considered a major precursor award for future Oscar winners, and are often a good indicator of what’s to come at the Academy Awards. In 2023, the SAG Awards awarded Everything Everywhere All At Once the award for Outstanding Performance By a Cast in a Motion Picture, and gave acting awards to Michelle Yeoh, Brendan Fraser, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis. All four actors went on to win Academy Awards in their respective categories, and Everything Everywhere All At Once took home Best Picture, as well.

When Are the SAG Awards 2024?

This year, the SAG Awards will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2024 in Los Angeles, California, which will be Sunday, February 25 for us Aussies. The SAG Awards will be held at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall.

How to Watch the 2024 SAG Awards in Australia

Last year, the Screen Actors Guild announced its partnership with Netflix, and the 2023 award show was streamed live on Netflix’s YouTube channel.

This year, however, Netflix is getting into the live streaming business. The 2024 SAG Awards will be streaming live on Netflix globally. In Australia, you can tune into the show from 12pm AEDT on Sunday, February 25.
