The Headlines: Optus Has Been Cyber Attacked and Here Are the Vital Facts

That’s right, after taking a public holiday snooze, The Headlines are back. No, we’re not celebrating Grand Final Eve, and we’re not celebrating National Great American Pot Pie Day. There are a lot of huge news stories we need to cover, so let’s get into the serious nitty-gritty.

Optus Was Recently Cyber Attacked

On September 22 at 2pm, Optus informed the general public they were hacked. This attack may have resulted in customers’ names, dates of birth, phone numbers, and email addresses being compromised. Additionally, for a smaller percentage of Optus customers, their driver’s licences or passport numbers might have been stolen.

“We are devastated to discover that we have been subject to a cyberattack that has resulted in the disclosure of our customers’ personal information to someone who shouldn’t see it,” stated the CEO of Optus, Kelly Bayer Rosmarin.

“As soon as we knew, we took action to block the attack and began an immediate investigation. While not everyone may be affected and our investigation is not yet complete, we want all of our customers to be aware of what has happened as soon as possible so that they can increase their vigilance,” Rosmarin also noted. “We are very sorry and understand customers will be concerned. Please be assured that we are working hard, and engaging with all the relevant authorities and organisations, to help safeguard our customers as much as possible.”

If you’re an Optus customer that has any concerns or questions, you can get in touch with the company by using the My Optus App or calling 133 937.

Putin Is Conscripting 300,000 Men to Fight in Ukraine

The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, has decided to extend his pointless and devastating war against the people of Ukraine. Last week, he lost over 500,000 sq km of ground in a humiliating series of Ukrainian victories. But instead of bowing out of this conflict, the BBC has reported that he’s now conscripting 300,000 more people to engage in this war.

A lot of Russian folks aren’t happy with this decision. On the Russia-Georgia border, kilometres of vehicles are lined up. Some of these vehicles contain men that don’t want to fight in the conflict.

One 26-year-old PhD student told the BBC, “I will break my arm, my leg… Anything to avoid the draft.” However, his stepfather is concerned, as dodging conscription in Russia is a crime.

NSW’s Homeless Outreach Program Is Working

In some legitimately great news, the NSW Government’s assertive outreach program is saving people from lives of homelessness. According to the ABC, this scheme has housed over 100 people in the Tweed Shire Council.

This program has fortunately been extended for another two years, but the council wants it to become a permanent fixture of its community. As Councillor, Nola Firth, explained, “We know that people can’t deal with the situations that caused them to be homeless until they have the security of having a roof over their heads.”
