Fans of Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi rejoice, the actor is once again using the force and donning the characters robes once again.
In a new series on Disney+, McGregor will star in an untitled Obi-Wan Kenobi series which begins filming in March 2021.
Appearing via Zoom on The Graham Norton Show, the 49-year-old announced the news.
“It’s the Obi-Wan Kenobi story, I suppose. It’s not all me, but it certainly will be a lot of me, which is good,” he said. “We start shooting it in March next year.”
According to entertainment outlet, Variety, the series had been in the works since August 2020, however, when writer Hossein Amini decided not to go ahead and the pandemic hit, production was halted.
Of course, McGregor is not the first person to play such an iconic role in the Star Wars universe with Alec Guinness originating the role in the original trilogy. The actor, who died in 2000, was a source of inspiration of McGregor who watched some of his earlier work to prepare for the role.
“The fun thing about doing that in the first place when I was much younger was trying to imagine Alec Guinness, how would he play these scenes as a younger guy?” McGregor said. “It led me to watch some of his earlier work, which I had never seen before. Brilliant movies, wonderful films that he’d been in, and I had such a great time studying him in those movies,” he said.
McGregor first played the role in 1999s Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, followed by Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones in 2002 and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith in 2005.
